Weird whining noise...

My mom has a 99 3.8 vert, and it has an RPM determined whine. It sounds somewhat like a supercharger, but a little bit quieter and cheaper.

I'll try to get a video of it if I can, but it might be hard at the moment.

Power steering pump would be my guess. My sister's '98 3.8L made a sound like that and it was the pump.

I know the PS Pump is a whiner on these cars, but it's another whine in addition to the powersteering pump.

She had an Exploder back when I was a kid and it did it, but I was 8 and don't remember what it was, I'm wanting to say EGR valve.

Fluid level on what? And it has a new alternator on it and the whine didn't change, it's had it since it was new it's just getting louder and louder. It's so bad people stare and she can't hear the stereo anymore.

Working in the auto parts industry , just because it's new doesn't mean it has all pristine bearings. Fluid level would be ALL of them. check the bearings in your smog pump lately?

No on the fog pump, fluids are good. I know a "new" alternator doesn't mean a good alternator, but what are the chances of a different alternator picking up the same whine and it still growing at pretty much the same rate?

Alternator is gonna be my guess... possible it could be something else but alternator.

Oh and it won't ever sound like a supercharger whine..

Take a long screw driver and set it on different places around the noise you will find it if it's a bearing or something you will hear it in the screwdriver when put near your ear. (stethoscope)

hey man, i know what you're talking about, my car does the same thing.. if i'm cruisin in 2nd with the radio off and punch it around 4krpms i can hear it, it almost sounds like a turbo wastegate to me, but i figure its probably a vacuum leak somewhere in the system so i haven't given much more thought to it

it was the idler pulley on my v6, too
sounds like a supercharged lil' thing until it gets noticeably louder
changed it out and problem was fixed.
