what tires/ sizes for 97 cobra 17x8 wheels?

i just picked up a set of 97 cobra wheels to be used as my track set. they dont have tires on them yet and im looking for size recomendations for these on my fox. i run my 95 R wheels (17x9) with 275's out back and 245's up front on the street and the 275's rub a little under hard cornering. thats what i NEED to avoid.... thus the 8" wide wheel

245/45s or 255/45s will do just fine on an 8" wheel. As I recall, GTs all came with 245/45s, and some (all?) Cobras came with 255/45s on their 17x8" wheels. 255/40s would probably also work.

The 94-95 Cobras came with the 255-45 tires, all had 8" wheels except the 95R models. After 95 all the later ones came with 245-45 tires on 8" wheels. I would recommend the Kumho V710 in a 245-45-17 for those wheels.

I dunno, but I doubt it. I think the speed difference between a 245 and 255 was pretty much negligible.

This calculator comes in handy when checking tire sizes against one another. Its not perfect but itll give you an idea.

cool, thanks guys! i need some good tires but i also need them to last more than one weekend so i think i should go with something other than the V710's. is there another tire that holds up a little better yet still retains very good traction?

Are you looking for race tires or a street tire? You never specified...

These are a great tire for the money, they have good grip and theyll last a long time also. Dont count the V710s out either they wear pretty good for the incredible amount of grip they have.

i did say they are going to be my track set of tires/ wheels in my first thread.


thanks for the link, ive heard good things about those as well. i just didnt know if they are that sticky of a tire. if they are just about the best compromise between sticky and longevity then i think they are what im after.

If you're thinking about getting a soft compound street tire like the Khumo MX vs. a race compound like the V710s I would say to go with the Falken Azenis RT615s instead.

Glenn, I have a set of 17" x 9" Cobra R wheels...what size tire would be best on them for my Cobra? I was thinking 275/40 but I've read that 255/40 are ideal. I'm not ready to buy yet...just for the future.

Is there much difference concerning sidewall flex between a 255/40 and 255/45 series tire, the maker and style being the same?

Just pick up a set of nitto II R 275/40/17 they run small. Stiffest sidewall and get 15K out of them.

It sort of depends on what your looking for. The V710 in a 275 is a bit too wide for a 9" wheel, but you can get it on the rim and it would work. With stock front control arms youmay have some interference issues near full lock. A V700 Victoracer in a 275-40 fits much better with less chance of rubbing and would likely give you more life but has a bit less traction. The Victoracer in a 255-40 fits perfect for an open track tire and works equally well in AX. If you want longer life and the ability to do some AX and OT the Nitto 555 RII in a 275-40 is a good tire, but it gives up a bit of lateral grip compared to the V700 or the V710. If you want to run in a street tire class the Falken Azenis is tough to beat but is the least grippiest of the bunch.

The nitto II is the best bang for the buck, I ran a set on my daily driver, drag raced it, autocross, OT, and at 15K still had tread. Even did very well in the rain.
