Question Endurance Racing Suspension Mods

Hey guys, new to the forum. First post.

I bought a stripped but extremely straight 93 SSP (unconfirmed though) notch for $800. The plan is to build an endurance road racing car. Weve been racing miatas to this point but need a little more room for some of the drivers that want to help build the car this go-around. Ive owned 2 Foxbodys in the past but never built one to race.

I bought a turbo 2.0 LNF EcoTec motor and transmission to transplant into the car. Its a direct injection turbo motor that came in the pontiac solstice gxp and saturn sky redline. They are supposedly good to 300 reliable WHP. From my internet research the LNF/5 speed should weight about 350lb wet. I should be about 200 lbs under the 5.0/T5 thats in the car now.

What would be the best setup for suspension. It already has beefy subframe connectors and MM heavy duty rear lower control arm. I plan to do a torque arm and panhard bar, but thats as far as ive got. I can probably budget 2-3k for the suspension.

Might consider a "poor man's 3-link" (PM3L) for the rear to save some dough. There are a couple of proponents of that setup here, perhaps one of them will chime in. It would also save you some weight (skipping the heavy torque arm and torque arm cross-member), which would mesh nicely with the weight savings of the drivetrain.

Max Motorsports K-member, A-arms, and caster/camber plates up front. Coil-overs up front. Bilsteins or Konis all around.

Pretty neat idea on the drivetrain - similar to the Ecoboost Cobra (which obviously used an Ecoboost 4cyl rather than an Ecotec 4cyl). You can find that one on FB - https://www.facebook.com/ecoboostcobra/. Do you have all the ECU and harness stuff, or does GM sell a control pack for that engine?

They run these engines in sand rails apparently. Those guys have figured out how to run them stand alone with different ecus and HP tuners. I liked the idea of direct injection for full economy and 300 hp is plenty if I can get the car down to 2500lbs wet.

Sounds like a blast! I was part of a discussion on building a 24 hours of Lemons type car with a Fox body and 2.3 EcoBoost out of a 2017 Mustang. Pretty easy 300Hp, comes with a 6 speed manual, light as hell, easy on brakes (and fuel!), what's not to like??
When it became clear that:
1. It would happen at my shop.
2. I would do all the work.
3. I would spend most of the money.
The discussion was at an end.

Maximum Motorsports parts are better than just about anything else you can buy for road racing. Spend LOTS of time on their website. Cruise the web for some Cobra brakes on all 4 corners, and the PM3L stuff, and have some FUN! With a bargain or 2 , you can easily stay under the suspension budget.
Come to think of it, I have a single Heim joint UCA and pair of MM light TA springs I could part with. PM me if interested.

'88 LX hatch. Mild 331. Full MM suspension minus the Torque Arm, Cobra Brakes. Not as slow as it used to be.

Welcome to Corral.net! Your project sounds cool, would like to see more.

Really need to look at the rules of your race series to know for sure what you can do to the car.

How long are the races? What size wheels and tires?

The front suspension geometry on the fox platform loses camber as you turn, so static camber needs to be fairly high. I've seen people running over 3* and even up to 5-6* on escort's car. I'd think after 12 or 24 hours you'd trash a set of tires running that much camber. Only solution I know of is to cut the shock tower to allow more caster, or go to SLA which would blow your budget alone.

With only 300hp, you should try the PM3L first. But if you're not constrained to a live axle, you should take a look at an IRS rear. I think there was a Lincoln model that came with the same IRS as the Cobra that's cheaper to buy used than the Cobra unit. Being able to adjust rear toe and camber would be very valuable on an endurance car. Also, the IRS is a bit more compliant over rumble curbing.

Thanks for the input guys.

The plan now is to use the front control arms, spindles and brakes off a 93 Vette and fab a custom k-member and a coil over kit. I don't know if it will work but we're going to give it a shot. We have the Vette k-member for mounting points.

Not sure what we're going to do in the rear. Maybe the PM3L or a MM torque arm. IRS may come later on, who knows.

We will be running in World Racing League gp2 and probably Chump car EC.

Installing those Corvette front suspension parts really makes no sense.

Just use 1994-2004 Mustang FCAs, Mustang Cobra brakes and 1994-95 spindles. Build a spindle adapter and use a fabricated upper control arm. This way almost everything will be off the shelf parts and aftermarket parts can be installed in place of the stock ones. This will be much less work than your current plan.

^^^ Agreed. As an example, I just bumped a thread with an example of a home-built SLA that user edhunter built.
