What kind of rear ends do they use in land speed events?

Since they are going for top speed in a straight line I would assume a spool would be the choice, but since they aren't timed, and the gears are usually very high [for top end] an open would work just as good.

So what is it, spool, open, or does it even matter?

It depends if the car has an IRS or solid axle.
