Best Cheap factory shock and strut replacement

What is the most used or recommend replacement for factory shocks or struts for a 99-04 gt? I have lakewood drags on the front and rear and when i plan on autocrossing this year I am pretty sure that those will kill me. So I am looking for something that is a cheap upgrade. Nothing crazy I am just starting out and a poor college student after all.

Not sure if the Bullitt dampers 'n swaybars kit is still available, but it was decent value for the money.

The blue tokico's were used mrt's bullit stang as a upgrade those run like $350 for all, but the tokico d spec are adjustable and run like $550 for the set, anyone have any experience with these or maybe some konis or kyb

KYB's are a waste of money, GR-2's ride like ass. Tokico blues or Koni STR.T's as a minimum.

For a lower priced shock/strut I highly recommend the Tokico Illuminas.

What are you running for springs? Are you looking for dampers and springs, or just new dampers?

LRS still has the "Bullitt kit" on their site for $500, which is pretty hard to beat if you're buying aftermarket parts individually.

As SVTCobra347 said, Tokico Blues or Koni Streets are about the best you'll do at the budget end of the spectrum.

The Tokico D-specs are supposed to be quite good (I'm a Subaru guy, and they get very good reviews in the Subaru applications). Tokico says it's their most advanced damper, so at only $50 more than the Illuminas, I would think the D-specs are the way to go if you choose Tokico.

I am running H&R Supersport springs, and just looking for some new dampers. I had some Tokico Illuminas on my car before but never used them for their potential, just had them on soft all the time for street and drag,

Also like the one guy said if the D specs are just a tiny bit more why not go with those? or does anyone have horror stories or no one ever use them?

Yeah if you do Tokico get D specs. If your budget is that big, look into Bilsteins or Koni SA's, warranty FTMFW

I have tokico hp's ("blues") with eibach pro-kit springs and honestly the car handles and rides like crap. The nose nearly scrapes the ground under hard braking, body roll is horrendous, the ride is bad and overall the car is a sloppy mess.

Honestly I went the "cheap route" and regret it. Save up a bit and do it right the first time.

Blues are really no better than stock and shouldn't be used with aftermarket springs.

The Eibach springs don't help much...they look ok but definitely not the best for handling.

wow thats one hell of a dive... i've heard by most that eibachs are good for the big drop but not for ride or handling... How are H&R Supersports for handling? the ride feels fine a little stiffer, but nothing horrible; and the little bit of lowering is not overkill.

I autocrossed all last year on Tokico Blues and an Eibach Pro-Kit. Both work better than stock (except on a termi). I didn't have nearly the dive or roll pictured, but I have other upgrades that assist me in that department and the soft spring/big bar theory was working out fairly well.. The Blues are really only good for an H&R Sport or Eibach Pro Kit, maybe C springs though, any stiffer springs and they'd be underdamped. I'll leave any feedback on the Koni "Orange" STR.T's to someone who has used them, I hear good things but I don't have any firsthand knowledge on them.

I'm now running Bilstein's front and rear, and may be swapping to H&R Race springs in the near future, we'll see at a Test and Tune autocross in the near future if that combo will stay..

I don't think I'd consider H&R Super Sport a great handling choice, though they're great for lowering a car..

thanks for the impute, hey just like the Eibach setup "better than stock" is how the H&R's feel. I guess I'll take this one step at a time, and as I get more into it i'm sure i'll want more fancy and better parts, but I think I'm going with something adjustable so I can still go street, auto X, and Drag. Plus i've never auto X a rwd or driven one hard like that just used to Understeer in the FWD , so I plan on spinning a few times this year maybe and as I feel my skill is increasing the more I front for better bars, tires, and so on later
