17x8 Doesn't Clear Qa1 Front Coil Overs?

I just put a 5 lug conversion kit on the car from LRS and I have 98' cobra wheels to put on the car and the wheels don't even come close to clearing the coilover. How to you coil over guys fit 17x8's on your foxbody????

You did purchase a set of 4 bolt CC plates too I assume? What year spindle are you running?

Yessir. They're Qa1 as well. They were on the car before with 15x3.5 skinnies.

Only a 245.. This is making no sense. Could it be that it's a 98 Cobra wheel? I thought 94-04 were all the same offset. I need another 1/2" of clearence.

How long is the spring? I can't run anything longer than 10" springs else my 96 Cobra 8" wheel will contact the spring.

Hmmm that may be it. Mine is a 14" 175lb spring. I was going to get a 14" 325lb so should I go shorter? What lb spring do you have?

springs are too long although i can't recall if you need a 12 or 10" spring to clear it but search around as i know this has been posted before

Thanks for showing me this! However, does anyone know if the factory 98' Cobra wheels have more backspacing than other years? The bs measures in at 6" even and I feel that that's way too much for an 8" wheel. I've been trying to find information about this and can't seem to find any. Thanks for all the help. I just got done putting my new 5 lug axles in and mounted the wheels up and they sit extremely far in. I'll see if I can't snap a picture.

6" backspace wheels with 14" springs is pretty common on street cars so I believe you have other issues.

What other issues could I have? Stock a arms on an aje kmember with Qa1 Coilovers with blistien struts with stock 5.0 spindles. I'm really lost. It looks like I'd still need a tiny bit of space for them to fit with the springs up.

Just throwing some ideas out:

I believe those struts have a little room to adjust at the spindle location. Do you have them pushed away from the spindle as much as possible? You can slot them some more as well.

BTW, I did not realize you were using stock spindles. I had 94 spindles when I had 5.98" BS wheels with a 14" spring. Don't the 5-lug rotors space the wheel outboard a small amount farther than the 4-lug ones? I believe they do and that would probably make them somewhat equal to the ones I had.

The '98 Cobra wheels are 17x8", 5.72" backspacing, just like all of the other 17x8" GT and Cobra wheels. The 17x9" R58 Cobra R wheels I ran for years with coilovers have a 5.95" backspacing. Basically, it's not the wheels that are the problem in this equation.

I think the combination of the Fox spindle + long springs is the problem.

'89 GT convertible, N/A 357W, MM front susp w/425# coil-overs and Koni D/As, MM TA/PB rear setup (Koni Yellows, 390-430# springs), Stoptech 332mm / 12" Baers, MM 6 point rollbar, Maier 1.5" flared fenders & quarters, 18x9.5" front/18x10.5" rear Enkei RPF-1s (street), 18x10" CCW C-10s (track), etc...

300# Hypercoils on an MM C/O kit mounted on Bilsteins --->

Hmm well I guess the first thing I will try is the shorter spring. I'm going to order that tonight. Can you use an SN95 spindle with fox brakes? I'm on a budget right now and want this to work out right.

No, the fox calipers won't work with SN95 spindles/rotors.

Thanks. For some reason, a buddy just came over and his 97' Cobra wheels fit right in and have TONS more room than my 98's. It makes no sense, as the backspacing is exactly the same. I'm ordering my 8" coilover springs tonight so hopefully I can get this junk solved. The 5 lug kit is brand new so I'd really just like to keep my fox spindles and such.

Keep in mind with 8" springs that you may need a 1" spacer. When I went from a 10" 300# spring to an 8" 425#, I needed the spacer to get my ride height back up. However, that may have been because I have an older Griggs' coil-over kit that has a shorter threaded sleeve than their current stuff or the MM stuff (I think someone on corner carvers gave me some threaded sleeve heights last year to verify this).

So I ordered a 9" 350lb spring. The only reason I went with the 9" is because they wanted $70 a piece for the 8" just because they were chrome plated. Do you think the spring will clear/is it stiff enough? The quicker the better so if it's not the ideal size I can change the order.

I assume the Bilsteins you're using are the HDs rather than an MM revalved version. If so, according to MM (http://www.maximummotorsports.com/st...g_spring_rates) the 350# spring may exceed the Bil's valving and damping may degrade. My 300# springs at 10" clear my 96 cobra wheels and ride quality is firm but not harsh. However, on a mostly street car 300# is as high as I'd want to go.

I agree re: the 300# being a good street rate. That was the first coil-over rate I tried and it was very pleasant on the street, imo (compared to my previous #1000 in. conventional springs, it was awesome).

Where'd you buy your springs? I think you need to shop around.

Edit: I'm sorry for being such a newb. I always read things but I tend to find a million different opinions about things so this thread is a result of me wanting an answer so I can pull the trigger on an order. So thanks for your help!

Springs are springs. All you need to know are the inner diameter, height, and rate. Typical front coil over springs are 2.5" ID. You can usually find used springs for about $60/pair before shipping via this site or corner-carvers.

Hey guys,
Thanks for putting up with my lack of knowledge. After reading, looking on here, and talking to MM and Qa1, I ordered powdercoated 10" 300lb 2.5" ID springs from Qa1 and MM 375-400lb rear springs. I'm picking up a 4cyl swaybar for $25 tomorrow. I'm holding off on the panhard bar until summer. If anyone has 94-97 Cobra wheels or a rear disc brake conversion, pm me. My 98's are on Craigslist and will hopefully be sold next week, along with my Draglites. The reason why the 98's don't work is because the grease cap for the front wheel bearings sticks out where the SVT center cap should be. I test fitted 97's last night and they fit great, and will be perfect with the new springs.

Sounds like you're moving in the right direction, but I still don't understand how the '98 Cobra wheels didn't clear the coilovers but the '97s do.

Yeah, this confuses me too. Typically, the larger bearing snout Fox disc does not allow a later wheel with small hub bore to fit flush with the disc. Guys have chamfered the snout to allow the fitment or have used spacers but this makes no sense to me at all. To the OP, I'd check this again before going with a new set of wheels, especially if you like the 98 five-spoke design over the 96 and earlier style - which I'm using (although with sn95 spindles) --->

I did. the centercap on the 98's does not clear the snout, but the 97 Cobras do. They won't clear the coilovers yet, but they will when I get my shorter spring. I picked up 97's today and they fit over the snout with no issues.
