295 square setup on Cobra Rs

Has anyone done this?

I'm looking at 295/35s Hoosier A6s to go on my Cobra R wheels.

I'm pretty certain the backs won't be a problem.

The fronts, I'm not sure.

I'm running MM coilovers front and rear. Front camber will probably be -2.5 degrees - -3 degrees.

I DO NOT want to roll the fenders.

I DO NOT want to roll the fenders.
Can't say for sure.... but shouldn't be an issue. We've had 275's on stock cars....And friends run 315's on 11's without their fenders cut on SN95's..... So you should be ok.

I run 315/35/17 square on my 99 on repro 10.5x17 Cobra R wheels. Not sure how it works on the pre 99 cars. The 295 is kinda tall so 315 may work better for you. I don't think either will squeeze on a 9 inch wheel very well. The 10.5 is heavy as hell but the extra rubber is worth it IMO.

I use a 5/16 spacer on front and run -3* camber for auto-x. Make sure and relocate the ABS wires or you will chew them into, especially on the passenger side. (I think)

^What spring rates are you running and how much clearance do you have between the fender/tire when sitting still? I want to run a similar setup next year.

I'm running C springs with Tokico Iluminas set on 5. I have x2 ball joints but I offset the drop of those with some custom upper isolators made from delrin. I'd say the gap is near stock and no more than an inch drop.

What offset/backspacing are your 17 x 10.5's? I'm looking to run a similar setup on my '00, but can't find any inexpensive wheels that I can use a 1/2" or less spacer in the front. The 27mm offset wheels that are readily available have almost a 7" backspace, and I need 6".

I wonder if anyone has tried these wheels up front. 18mm offset would seem friendlier.

They are pricier, but are lightweight at 16 lbs!

I assume 295s will fit better than 315s on10" wIde wheels

Did you mean the 315 is taller?

That was one of the reasons I went with the 295 vs the 315 and I didn't want to go larger than a 10" rim. While it's not alot, 25.3 vs 25.6, I wanted the shorter tire to help lower the gear ratio, as I am limited to 3.55's per class rules.

Other reasons:
-lighter by 3 lbs each (not alot, but my goal is 3200)
-less cost (again, not much, $15 per)
-fitment concerns with the 315's on 11's (10's fit fine w/o spacers)
-cost of a light 17x11 (the 295's on 10's were bad enough)

As you can see I went with the "light is right" vs the "larger sneaker" approach. Both subjects have been discussed here before, with most in favor of a greater footprint than less weight. (How's that beer commercial go? Tastes great, less filling?)

dp-Sorry for the no response to your PM. Been putting in a lot of hours at work and I've been a lazy a## when I get home.

And yes, 295's on 10's are a much better fit.

255/45, 285, and 295 are typically taller. 245 275 and 315 usually have the same diameter. Hoosier makes an odd size 295 (shorter sidewall) that is shorter than typical. I have mounted 295 V710's and they are taller. They would rub slightly because of it, but I would have no hesitations running it again on my Cobra Rs. You can adjust your ride height and bump stops to overcome the issue.

T1 C5 Corvette racers have been limited to 17x10 front rims, but they manage to squeeze 315 Kumho and hoosiers on to them and race without issue.

When I researched this stuff in a long time back I was running Kumhos. They make the 295 in the 40 profile. I see now that Hoosier makes in in the 35 which IS shorter.

I'd have to agree. Similar to my street/HPDE 255/40 Dunlops on the stock 17x8's. Minimum wheel width should be 8.5, but they fit on the 8's. Although I'm itching to get a set of 9's. I believe the tire will work better on a 9 to reduce some of the push.

Just when I thought I was going to buy 275s...

I think for my purposes, I am going to run either 295s or 275s on Cobra R wheels and then eventually upgrade to 17x10s at all corners - Sch-weet!

My Cobra still won't turn like an "autocross" car, but it WILL have more rubber than most

The last thing I wonder is if I will get a lot of deflection underload on a smaller rim? I know the Miata guys run like 255s on 7" rims or something like that, so it can't be the worst thing ever

I don't think I would lose sleep over deflection issues, especially in autocross situations. Shelby's in FS are running 285 or 295's on 8 or 8.5" wheels, etc with no problem.

help on 275/40's

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but I am not having luck finding a definite answer to my 1995 Mustang's front tires question. I have 03/04 Cobra 17x9 wheels and I haven't purchased race tires yet, (waiting for spring). I am hoping to run in SCCA's Blue Mountain Region for hillclimbs next year. I was hoping to just run 275/40 17's all around on those 03/04 rims, but before I took the 255/45x17's off (someone put 255 Nitto 555's on them) I put one up in the wheel well and the sidewall was just a 1/4" inside the fender's wheel edge (they really don't have a "lip"). There was only about a finger-width gap between the inner sidewall and the strut.

FRPP catalog says 03/04 Cobra rim has 6.12" backspace (26mm offset) and the 95 Cobra R has 5.98" backspace (24mm offset)

The bottom line is, am going to have to run 255/40 x17 on the front or has anyone run the 275/40 on a 03/04 rim. Should I switch to 99-04 spindles, since they stick the rim out further and just roll the fender lip or what? Advise?

I'm not the one to ask, but I think you should be able to fit 275s with no problem unless you've got some kind of weird suspension setup in the front.

I'm actually getting ready to buy a set of 295/35/17 Hoosier A6s (used) to mount on my Cobra Rs. I am hoping that I won't have any issues.

Does anyone know for sure? I am guess that since some on this thread use those tires on Enkei RPF1s with an offset of 18mm, then at the worst, I could run a 6mm spacer and should be okay.

I'm looking forward to more grip.
