16-inch wheel + cobra front brakes?

Has anyone ever tried to put a 16-inch wheel over a front cobra brake setup? I know with a 17-inch wheel I have plenty of room to spare, but I wonder if there are any OEM wheels that would clear?

HIGHLY doubt any 16" rim would fit. My 11.65" rear rotors/calipers on the IRS barely clear the 16" rim. I'm pretty sure a 17" rim is the minimum.

Over on c-c.com they report that this wheel fits.
http://www.wheelsbymbmotoring.com/pr...el=Competition

On a related note and something to think about....Over on C-C.com there was a thread about running 12" crown vic rotors and using a modified bracket for the cobra brakes; pretty sure it's a trick the CMC guys are doing 'cause they are required to run 16" wheels.

This is the thread http://www.corner-carvers.com/forums...+rotors&page=3

I'm a little intrigued by this as I want to go to a 16x10 wheel but don't want to drop back down to 11" fox rotors. This way, I'd be able to keep my cobra brakes and If needed could switch between 12" and 13" rotors.

Anyone know if the 'SC' style 17 x 10 wheel will clear the front 13" cobra setup?

16" Real Wheels will fit but you have to mill down the cooling fins on the back of the Cobra caliber a few millimeters. Also must use a 1/8" wheel spacer.

2k2GT tried and they won't fit without a spacer or grinding.

Well, you should doubt it a bit less, as there have been 16" wheels available to clear the Cobra brakes for years. In addition to the options already mentioned that are available today, Steeda used to sell a 16x8" wheel called the Hexcentric that was advertised to clear Cobra brakes. Those are long gone now, but even when Cobra brakes were new to the market you could find 16" wheels to clear them.

I didn't know you could wrap 16's around the cobra brakes, interesting.

To the OP, you were asking about OEM wheels though.

"...and then I jizzed in my pants...."

Do they get a lot of snow there? Is this for a winter setup?

No, this is for a track only car. I figure a 16-inch wheel will be lighter over all and the tires are slightly cheaper.

I dont know about OEM wheels, but I am running 16x12 with 6" bs REAL racing rims at all 4 corners with the Cobra PBR brakes. I need to run a 1/4" spacer up front to clear. I also needed to significantly grind down the cooling fins on the caliper. Other than that plug and play
I would say go for it.

And yes tires are alot cheaper. I just got 16 yes 16 tires 6 25x12, 2 25x13 and 8 27x14 for $1200. 4 of which 2 fronts and 2 rears are brand new.

The MB wheels aren't substantially lighter and are only in 8" widths. What is the advantage there?

Aren't the Real Racing Wheels steel as well? I know that the custom width is advantageous but if they are steel isn't that going to be heavy as well? Do they have aluminum wheels?

I realize that going to a 16" you are moving the mass closer to the hub and therefor gaining some inertia advantages over a 17" wheel weighing the same amount, but is it that much?

16x11 Real Wheels I run are aluminum. They are 16 lbs each.

I've got a set of the MB Motoring Competitions in 17 x 9 with 27mm offset, and they only weigh 21 lbs. Not the 28 lbs. listed. They are almost a pound lighter than my Steeda Ultralites in the same size. I would take the weights on that chart with a huge grain of salt.
