AIX Turbo Testing @ Willow Springs Last Weekend

My good friend Bryan made another one from last weekend's track session.

It was a good time even though things were not anywhere near perfect but considering what could have gone wrong we'll take it

Some candid comments with some great friends..

Thanks very much to all who have supported me:

S&S Fabrication, Bakersfield, CA
Fors Performance Solutions, Anaheim, CA
Agent 47, Carlsbad, CA
Hoosier Tires
ROSS Racing Pistons
RPM Racing Parts Maximum
Master Power Turbo
Brakeman Brakes

See you at the track!

Nice to see someone in AIX using a Ford powerplant in a Ford. Guess nobody will be walking you in the straights at nationals anymore!

Question What about the other 50% of the suspension?

Are you gonna swap out the GR rear suspension soon and run the secretive Agnt 47 3 bar set up out back? Does Agnt 47 make a watts or panhard bar? Or is it just a custom order kinda thing? I know they run longer lowers similar to the Griggs ones along with a equally long 3rd link which attaches to their crazy frame kit set up in the car, just above the bulkhead. I'm interested in what will be putting all that power to the ground.......

Must keep making progress

800+rwhp on a 340ci! wow, he's going to win AIX championship if the car stays alive.

That is nothing special, there are people doing 1200 HP out of turbo carbed 302's, but the real test will be it's drivability, reliability and if that beast can be controlled.

BTW bad as car.

Tell me about your brakes

Ernesto.

Managing that kind of HP takes many disciplines. What can you tell me about the brake set up you are running? I know your car is lighter than mine, but your top speed is significantly higher. If your brakes can live in that environment, I'm impressed.

im curious about tuning that...think it would be much more responsive with an EFI setup... any thoughts? maybe invent or modify a carb for boost sensing jets...hehehe...just a thought...do they have such a thing?

we had a few turbocharged blow through toyota 3tc's that used to run @ our local track....they did very well...but after switching to an efi setup...they were much more consistent with their performance as well as picked up some ET/mph along the way

car is plainly awesome!!!

Brakes work very well..

I have been using Brakeman brakes for about 9 years now. Using the same calipers since the very beginning.

Yes, I checked out the brakeman site after reading the credits in your initial post. Would you care to share which caliper, rotor and pads you use?

I believe Paul Faessler (who won the nationals last year and was the first to use a rear mount turbo setup) is running a Dart blocked 393 Ford based stroker. He has also been busy in the off season....
This will be fun to watch in 09.....

To bad the nationals aren't at Mid-Ohio again this year as it's only an hour drive for me.

I am definitely going with the full Agent 47 suspension package in the future. As of now we need to get everything that we have on the car dialed first and then we can move on to the rear suspension.

Thanks for asking.

I've shared the brakes info many times before but here it is again:

F4 calipers in the front and F3's in the rear.
#3 pads in front and a special compound for the rears's (you need to ask them what that is and mention my setup)..

13" rotors only and nothing heavy like a 14-15" setup with 6 zillion pistons, LOL..

No ducting front or rear..

Thanks for asking.

Very slowly due to the economy and a couple of other factors. It's getting pretty close to running but testing may have to wait a while.

Again best of luck with the new set-up.

So I would guess the Griggs team will be coming for you this year, should be very entertaining. I wish there was more media coverage on American Iron cars and events.

The car is absolutely wicked, nothing compares to the thrust of a turbo.

Keep us updated with your tremendous progress.

I agree about the media coverage. I get sick and tired of seeing figure 8 races, demo truck derbies and go-karts on that "ON THE EDGE" show on the SPEED channel.

I know turbo's are definitely fun but it can be a handful. Getting the part throttle and modulation response dialed is the key. We are scrambling to try some things out and bringing several turbo's at the track to try out to see which one I like. As a driver I am big on making things easy to manage so I can focus on driving as fast as humanly possible. That's my goal..

Thanks for the info Ernesto. I should have done some more searching to see if you had already posted the info.

Remember that SPEED is essentially owned by NASCAR. If they promote other road racing too much it could cut into their Grand-Am Cup franchise success. They would rather show lawnmower racing than non-nascar sanctioned racing.

Ernesto,

I was disappointed not to see you at the Time Attack this weekend, what happened? Johnson ran a 1:18.55 to win the unlimited class.

I was on hand to witness your testing at the NASA event two weeks ago, do you plan to make it up to Willow anytime soon?

Hey Ernesto,

I watched you at Willow. I saw some smoke as you left 9 and again when you came around the wall into the pit area. I hope everything was ok. Did you notice that the track was 2-3 seconds off? We were beating our heads against the wall untill Bart said he was off in time also. I got a few good photos of your car if you ever want them.

Hope to see you running at Buttonwillow

Ernesto,

I can't even imagine what driving a car like yours at the track would be. congrats and beat them all!!! When I started to track a late model turbo Mustang 4 years ago, people looked at me like I was retarded or that i was going to blow my engine in 10 minutes ...I love seeing more turbo mustangs at the track!!

HA! For a couple of years I told my friends what a pain in the ass was to learn how to track a turbo car with mismatched turbo-engine . I just got my third set of turbos in the car trying to match my engine and my driving style!!

One question... is your block aluminum or iron?

nope, I blew my stock engine... looooooooong time ago, i changed everything at the same time: block, got the turbos, tranny etc etc. Even though I run 'only' 500rwhp (or 580rwhp when I see a couple C6 Z06's ) I wouldn't do it without forged internals at those levels. I bet that 400rwhp with a nice fat tune will allow you to track on the stock shortblock since probably you won't need more than 7psi or so on a decent turbo setup. I personally also add a couple of gallons of 100 octane for insurance when I track the car.

I was dissapointed myself

1:18 is very fast though..It would have been darn near a perfect lap for me in perfect weather for me to pull a lap like that. I think it's doable but man that is sick FAST..

Not Willow but Buttonwillow in a few weeks for the AIX race. I hope to see everyone there.

I had some AN swivel oil line fittings that were leaking and we could not fix those at the track. I felt the track was okay but I did not get enough hard laps to make a call on the track conditions though. It was'nt very hot nor was it very windy so I know it could be much worse.

I would definitely like to see some pics if you have them. I would appreciate it as I am too cheap/broke to pay for the ones at the track. Thanks!
