Been calling around for quotes on installing my 4.10 gears (I have all the parts already except gear oil). First place I called, the local race shop. They will only do the swap if they buy the gears, and they wanted $850. HAHA. Next. Called local Goodyear. They don't do rear end work. WHAT? Next. Called the local Ford Dealership (largest in our area). Lady had to put me on hold to get the mechanic, he gets on, tells me 5.5 hours labor, about $420 at their shop. Then he tells me "but, we don't have all the equipment to do the install so we just eyeball it when we do rearends". WWWWWWHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT?????????

Screw them all, I'm buying a dial indicator and doing the install myself with a friend.

I've heard that Ford gears are the best quality, but are they honestly machined precise enough that you can just swap them out with same shim sizes without measuring like this dealership apparently does all the time? This dealership has been in business for like 25 years and they're the most reputible around.

I did a gear swap 15 years ago on a almost-new '87 LX 5.0 I had bought. I had never done a gear swap but figured I'd try it myself.

Once I had everything out of the old rear, I compared the old Ring & Pinion to the new stuff. I figured that if I measured each of them from the same points and found them to be close, I'd just put it back in with the same shims and look at the mesh pattern by putting some white lithium grease on the gears & spinning them.

Long story short, the new FMS gears were within a few thous. of the stuff I had just take out. They were so close in fact that I just did the swap with the original shims. I had the car until 1998 and never had any problem with the rear. Maybe I was just lucky, but once we did mine, we did a bunch of other guy's cars we knew back then & none of them ever had any problems either.

I read the same in another post, so I gave it a shot last weekend. So far so GOOD!!! a local machine shop charged me $20 to press off/on my bearings ( I replaced them all to be safe), and reused the stock shims from my 3.27's. The contact pattern looks good, and less than 12 hours after they were in they were getting the ever living crap beat out of them at the strip!!!
No growling or whining noises yet. If you were in Iowa I'd do it for a C note...:D

Good luck!

just subscribing hoping to find the info on install. I am going to try to put them in my self in my 02 GT.

What all do I need?

I am thinking the FMS 4.10 gear
with a install kit
a dial indicator to set the back lash
Gear Lube
Friction modifier

Your located in CT. right? While I'm all for working on stangs yourself, there is a place on L.I. that does the install for $375.00 (parts and labor). Have you read the tech article on doing the job? I personally wouldn't attempt it myself without someone whose done the job at least once. My suggestion would be to make an appointment at Mustang Magic, take the Bridgeport Ferry over and make a day of it. They have a very good reputation here in NY and are located in Deer park, L.I..
