Will cams for 4.6 ever give as much hp as a 5.0 cam???

just wondering, I know one cam can give a 5.0 up to 20 hp with some other little stuff. Is anyone going to make cams for my cobra that will do the same?? everyone I talk with now says that they are not worth it, if it's N/A. Too expensive and labor intensive? thanks :confused:

i think that cams on a 4.6 are worth the same as a 5.0 IMO, it just depends on the setup. honestly i would send your heads and cams to houston performance and get them ported with regrind cams. you would see a gain of about 50 rwhp with some longtubes and other boltons.

I think duane v hit the nail on the head. The 4-cam cars will respond even better than a 5.0 to a cam change, as long as the rest of the engine is set up for it.

Take for example a stock 5.0 pushrod motor and throw a cam in it... you won't get much unless you optimise the rest of the system with heads and an intake. Same goes for a stock 4.6.

Now look in my signature to see what happens when you make a 4.6 into a 5.0 liter displacement and port the stock heads, re-grind the stock cams, and re-work the stock intake manifold. Not to many 5.0 pushrod motors making that power with all the available aftermarket, and non even close to that power by re-working the stock stuff.

How much of a gain would I see on a 2V 4.6? I'm saving for the heads and have not really thought about stroking it out to a 302. If I can get a lot more power, I may think about it. BTW, if you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost in all to do it? I know it's $1,500 for the heads P&P with intake and cam, but how much for the stroker?

2000 GT - Stock internals, stock compression, stock intake, and heads:

Regrind cams gained the following: (at the rear wheels)
Avg. TQ: 22.0
Avg. HP: 32.8
Max TQ: 21.7
Max HP: 29.5
Gains at 6000rpms: 35.6tq / 40.7hp

Not bad for us little 4.6 2V engines, huh?

who did u have do the regrinds, and how much did the regrinds cost? then did u have somone else put them in or did u attempt it? and did u have to get new springs too..... thanks!

I always thought you had SHM cams, you have the Houston Regrinds? Blower or non blower spec?

If you don't mind me asking, how much do they charge for teh regrinds? and do I send all 4 of them to Crane?? thanks!!

Crane has some VERY interesting specs for the four valve engine. I have two sets of Cobra cams being done there right now. You send them your cams. Price is $460 for all four to be reground. You also have to use lash caps with them. Total on the caps is $150. Most Cobra's seem to like them very well.

Do they help you choose the specs by your setup, or do they have pre-done cam specs?? and how long and intensive is the install, my neighbor is a mechanic and we did my gears and springs, is this a shop job??? Thank you

Oh yeah, my car is a daily driver how long does the whole re-grind process take?

I've been all through my '98 DOHC & am trying to figure out where these lash caps go. Do they fit on top of the lash adjuster (ie on top of the mini-me pushrod sticking out of it) or do they fit underneath them somehow? Thx.

Crane will "suggest" a set of specs based on your combination. The install isn't the technological nightmare that it's made out to be. It's just lots of work. Time consuming. The regrinds take about 5-7 days to do once they arrive at Crane.

Gains depend greatly on what else has been done to the car. Usual gains are 20-30 rwhp on a normally aspirated car. Haven't seen anyone put them on a blower car so I'm not sure of that setup.

The lash caps go on the end of the valves. They are machined so that they fit in between the "rails" of the followers. The rails hold them into position. Very good design and works well.

Ok, that makes sense.

Hey Ron99Cobra, can you run down your mods for me? I'm building a factory five cobra with a '98 DOHC and it was a foregone conclusion that I was going to put a blower on it until I saw your numbers. If I can get to 350RWHP without taking the bottom-end apart, that would be awesome even if it means cams / headswap. Thx.

If I have a pure bolt on car with a stock intake and limited money, which should be addressed first? Heads and Cams? Intake? Both offer very good gains up top at the cost of power down low, correct? The intake seems like it would be something that I could pull the car in the garage and remove and reinstall myself. The heads/cams deal seems to be a little more labor intensive, but you have to take the intake off again to do this job. I wish I had the money for both, but I cant do it right now. Im trying to get everybit of power out of the car before the MMSO. Any suggestions?

FWIW the car make 305rwhp and 299rwtq on the stock motor.
