5.3 build log!!

Ok. So I went last night to buy a 5.3 I found on craigslist. Under 60k miles, complete with accessories, wiring harness, and even the ecu for $400? Sold. So the swap is a go! Quickly figured I needed to drop the locked up 4.6 and t45 out and get rolling with engine bay prep. Got it all dropped in about 3 hours. Oh, I dropped the engine/trans/k member together out the bottom an lifted the car off (so much easier than out the top). This build will be fairly slow, but a budget 10 second car is now underway! I'll be giving a step by step the whole way for future swaps. Any problems I run into, tips and tricks I get, and just general ideas. Alright. So dropping out the engine for those of you who are wondering how. Easy easy easy if you know your way around a tool box. I started with pulling the CAI off, then took the fuel rails off, along with the TB, plenum, and finally the intake manifold. ImageUploadedByAG Free1411869299.441139.jpgImageUploadedByAG Free1411869321.284923.jpg
Took a bunch of accessories off the front, completely took out the A/C from the engine bay (still under the dash), main harness, battery and tray, and took loose the power steering pump. Just started pulling odds and ends out, and kept everything for either selling or to make work with the swap (budget, remember?) I have a 5 speed, so from inside all I had to do was unscrew the shifter knob.
Next up was the front wheels, brakes, coil overs in my case, and front sway bar. Disconnected the clutch cable, took the steering loose and broke that free (don't forget that part) and put a jack under the tranny mount to take the mount bolts loose. As for exhaust, I left the h pipe on. Now time to hook up that picker! ImageUploadedByAG Free1411869589.157913.jpgImageUploadedByAG Free1411869602.880136.jpg
Don't try and follow this step by step, I'm sure I'm leaving out a TON... Anyways. I take the back 4 smaller k member bolts out first. Put a little tension on the engine, and take the 4 bolts and nuts loose from the main part of the k. ImageUploadedByAG Free1411869696.206275.jpg
By this point you can lower a little to see what hangs up. Of course I forgot the harness that connects to the battery/fuse box so had to take a minute for that -_- the trans wiring harness with O2 sensor plugs can stay on. Back and forth from the picker to the jack under the tranny, I slowly lowered everything onto some floor dollies used for under your wheels (harbor freight!!) life savers. I'll have to finish the drop in the next comment... Only 5 pictures per reply :/

Ok trees the engine and trans on the dollies. One pic from under the car, kinda hard to see, sorry. Next up is a pretty easy part. Make sure you have your rear tires blocked!!!!! Ok now then.. You can bolt a chain to either the bolts from your sway bar, or strap around the radiator support like I did with the picker and just lift the car enough to drag out the engine and trans. And there you go. Dropped right out the bottom. Again, I'm sure I missed a lot along the way (like the steering fluid lines on the rack) so take your time. Hayne's manual helps if you're unsure about anything. Or hell, just comment and I'll help as much as I can! Next up.. Cleaning the engine up and stripping it down for a little prep work before the drop in. Stay tuned!

Got some work done on the engine, turns out I'll need to hone the cylinder walls (hopefully they can be honed). Cracked the heads and found that only ONE cylinder had surface rust... Oh well, taking it all the way down to keep debris out of the rest of the engine and off the crank while I hone it, so I'll file the top compression rings for boost while it's out. Turns out that the drivers side valve cover fitting wasn't plugged off, and the rockers and push rods accumulated quite a bit of rust on that side.. But the passenger side looked perfect! It'll all be replaced anyways (heard of horror stories with stock rockers under high boost)

Inside the heads don't look too bad, but they'll be swapped for some 241 heads since these are the 862 castings. Anyone want to buy some 862 heads and truck intake?! Lol ImageUploadedByAG Free1412809846.743325.jpgImageUploadedByAG Free1412809864.650661.jpg
