Broken original 5.0T to JY 5.3T

Old engine lifted the head.. So instead of dumping 4-5grand into a new SBF. I just spent $400 on a complete 5.3L.

Went from this:

To this:

To a cleaned this:

Then the final product:

I have the engine/trans (TH400) already and yesterday fabbed up the motor plates. Hoping next week to have the engine/trans in for a mock up fitting.

How does your trans, converter, flexplate to LS all work out?

Really I mean, does your converter have the LS flexplate bolt pattern, orrr?

Thanks for the help - Jesse

It's all GM stuff. The trans is a th400, flexplate is from a 5.3 truck engine and the converter is for the th400. Though new holes had to be drilled for the torque converter.

Picked up the Hummer/GM hot rod pan today, along with a stock pan just in case.. Hoping Tuesday I can get the new pan on and run the motor a bit longer.

Also just ordered the flanges to start on the hotside..

Got a good bit done today. Replaced the cracked truck pan with the Hummer/GM hot rod pan, drilled/tapped the new one for oil return, tapped the water pump for the gauge, and got the pump wired.

Made a little noise too...

Depending on who you get your converter from you can ask for an LS bolt pattern. I got mine from FTI and it bolted right up to the TCI LS flexplate for my 5.3L.

That's pretty cool! I'm new to the whole LSx swap thing. Other than fabbing your own motor mounts, were there any other issues with fitting the 5.3 in the car? Also, if you were just running an NA setup, would the stock manifolds still work if you are using the stock foxbody kmember?

Little update..

Flange end's came..

Only had to trim the 5.0 hoses a bit to work wit the modifed rad and engine...

Since the truck fuel rail crossover is a monster, I decided to do a bit of improv for the stock hood (this is just temporarily)..

Final product for today...

Let's see what's left:

- Get drive shaft built
- Mount trans cooler
- Mount shifter
- Build the turbo kit
- Modify the exhaust
- Swap front springs
- Bleed the brakes

Not much left.. It'll be making it's debut down OCMD for the Spring car show.

No real fit problems, yea the stock manifolds would fit fine. They do for me and they are flipped forward.

If I had the cash, the swap wouldn't of happened.. I woulda did a built aftermarket block SBF 331.

Though for the money I have invested and how much power this engine can handle in totally stock form, it's worth it to me.

This past week i've got the fan mounted, trans dipstick installed, converter bolted up, trans cooler installed and drive shaft length measured and ordered... Should have the driveshaft end of the week then it's just the turbo kit left and a few minor things.
