The resurrection of an 88 fox - blown 410W build

So my car has been sitting for over 7 years in my lane way just looking a me as I walk by it to get into the house I've finally decided it needs to be brought back to life as I'm not getting any younger and life is to short (I've had a few very close people pass away within the last two years).

So a little back round information on how it came to sit this long, after losing my job (and going threw a divorcee) because of restructuring at work and then being lucky enough to get another job (within the same company that let me go) I decided I'd upgrade my heads as I felt that my ported RPM performers were holding back my 358W T trim feed engine, have a buddy that wanted to buy those I sold them. Then of course as life goes another curve ball, work was being cut to 4 days a week, hum, what to do, buy heads or pay my mortgage, lets just say I still own my house. Now the car was sitting with no heads on it and I knew that number 7 cylinder was hurting form a blow head gasket at the track one night (checked the compression before removing the head and it was only 70 psi with oil) so I decided I may as well tare it down to look into that. When I removed #7 piston I found that both rings were broke, as I removed the rest of the pistons I found 4 more that had broken rings (note to self, don't try and tune an engine without a wide band o2), maybe it wasn't those heads that were slowing me down. Anyway that's how it sat for 7 years, paying support and other priorities in life left little to no money for my car. Roll ahead to 2015, I have a new wife, a better paying job and a little more time.

I decided over the years that I wanted to build a blown 408 so I purchase a stroker crank and rods, I then took my block to the machine shop to have it checkout out and was told it would need another .010" to clean it up so while they were doing that I ordered the .040" over pistons with a 23 cc dish to keep my compression down. It was winter when the assembly showed up and my plan was to but the short block together in the garage until I found out its way to hard to do anything in a non insulated garage, -30 degree freezer. I spent the rest of that winter insulating it. I then spent the summer painting my house which I started the summer before. Which brings use to fall of 2016.

My car sitting in the lane way wasn't overly kind to it so it needed to go for paint. I wanted to try and do this myself but without the proper area and equipment to to it I decided to sub it out. Below is the car sitting at the painters before unloading it

No sure why the pictures are coming in sideways, they are not that way in the folder.

I had the dreaded passenger side shock tower / frame rail rust problem which we fixed all up and it looks awesome. He took pictures of this with his camera of the repairs but his camera when for a #### and we lost all those pictures.

Car getting a little primer on it and the repaired frame rail.

What you may find if you let you car sit for 7 years and the door seals dry out and fall apart on one side. It's not as bad as it looks as I was digging at the rust and spread it around.

I went to the paint store and looked over 100's of shades of blue, I was after something like true blue metallic. For a place that sells paint there lighting in the store sucks, it was hard for me to pick out the blue I wanted with pictures that I had on my laptop which I took with me. The one I picked was tri coat paint and you could pick fine or course metallic, I picked the course. We then did a test on the back of my hatch with using the grey primer as the base, we needed to use 5 coats to cover the grey and if it wasn't even it was all spotty. Also it didn't come out dark enough for my liking so we did a hatch hinge as a test using black primer, the result was a deeper blue with only a couple coats and a lot more even.

Because the paint was 20 years old and cracking we stripped the car down to bare metal, but those pictures are lost with the camera problems. I the pictures that I'm posting were taking with my phone so not perfect but better then nothing. Here are some pictures with the car all done with black primer.

During the painting going on I decided I should clean up my quarter window moldings so I brought them home and sanded them up. The last time I had it painted we ended up lightly sanding them, painting them with a flat black and then clearing them which made the ruff pitted surface much better but still left them a little ruff. So all I did was sand down the clear to smooth them up and then painted them with velvet black to look more like they did when new. Can't seem to find the pictures of the finally product but you will see them on the painted car photo's.

Went over a few weeks ago and put in the new front lights, if you look close you will see that the headlight isn't sitting 100%, the new headlights didn't come with the new mounting brackets, the ones from the old lights were cracked and have the adjusting bolts stripped or seized, I going to have to order new ones.

Damn, 7 years is a long time brother! Very happy to see you making progress on the car again and more importantly all the positive life changes. Great intro! I'm loving the colour scheme and the hard work you're putting into it. All the hard work you're putting into it now, makes it all the more satisfying when it's all said and done (like that ever happens lol). Good luck with the resto build, I'll be following along with interest.

Do you have the short block built and back together? Have you figured out which heads you're gonna put on?

P.S.

I'll be sending you a chiropractor bill! lol

Thanks Stan.

I planning on doing the engine build soon (still doing the honey do list which includes repaint the whole inside of my house). I'll post pictures as I go (and yes I did find a set of heads). Also people with a sharp eye may have noticed the lack of a hood in my photos, I'm unsure if the new engine combo will fit under my current hood so we never painted it. Need to get it done so I can finish up the paint job.

So I picked up another piece of the puzzle, after 180 buck, a 6 hour drive and 50 bucks of gas it's all mine. It has an extra 1" over my last hood so it should work.

So it's been a busy weekend. Testing fitting the hood and trimming it to fit, what a pain. I needed to trim the back edge on the passenger side and adjust the hings all the way over, you would think 30 year old hings wouldn't be hard to adjust..... lol

The old hood, think I really like it better, of course I would have painted it the new colors. Too bad it only has 1 1/2" clearance and the new one is 2 1/2" which I need for the new engine. What do you guys think?

So after getting home at 2 in the morning I got up and dug out my buddy's trailer, it only had 12 twenty foot roof trusses on it that sat on it all winter. I need to paint and add the trim to finish off the outside.

So I bought new head lights but because my tail lights were not that bad so I thought I never replaced them. Well once I looked at them I decided they wouldn't do, so with a little elbow action I have them looking better, not new but not too bad. Before and after pictures below. It took about 5 to 6 hours to do them both.

So loaded up on the trailer again last weekend to take it for a good buffing, there is some orange peel on the doors that doesn't look so good.

I've been working on repainting my trim, this has taken far too much time, the cowl is a small story in itself, because all my trim was painted 20 years ago and then cleared over the clear was ruff and flaking off it need to be sanded everywhere and let tell you there is a lot of sanding with all those little bars running from side to side. I also had to glue it back together as it was cracked in a lot of places from a hood that popped up on me (another story). Once it was all glued and sanded I painted the back side to cover the glue, when dried I flipped it over and sprayed the top, I never clean the top when I flipped it so it end up with dirt in the paint, so back to sanding all those ribs again. In the middle of the sanding my lovely wife made me brunch which included bacon, I then went back to sanding without washing my hands and finished it up. This time I blew off any dirt and dust and repainted and of course every where I put my hands the paint crinkled up, back to sanding. I repainted it again this time wiping it down with acetone and again it crinkled up so back to sanding again. I decided to prime it to seal it up, gave it a light sand and sprayed it again. All good. After painting some of the other trim pieces I noticed that some of them would crinkle up so I ended up sanding, priming, sanding and then painting them. Takes a long time. I probably have 100 hours in the trim pieces but they are finally finish. Oh while all this was going on I ordered a new carpet, head light brackets and new license plate light covers that I had on my wish list at JC ponys, I also had a new cowl and lower trim on the list but removed it and added all to cart and checked out. Once I received the invoice the next day I noticed it had the cowl on it, I called but it was already shipped so I ended up with a new cowl! Son of a..... Put the trim on over the weekend, looks pretty good.

I also painted the wiper motor and installed it. Today I sanded and primed the wiper arms. It's moving along, just way to slow. Along with the trim I also installed new dew wipes (outer belt line). Car is looking good on the outside. An engine and interior would be good.

Hi Len,

She's looking like new. Sucks we have to put them to sleep over the winter. I haven't checked in for a while and ran across your recent pics. Thumbs up my man, she looks good!

Thanks. I'm hoping to build the engine over the winter so the thread my get a little more interesting.

So how is your car working? Probably parked for the year, although today if mine was running I'd probably have it out.

That's great, I'll be keeping an eye out for your build. You going supercharged again, or something different?

Mine is away for the season, but I'm moving ahead going with a twin turbo setup this winter. Just sold the Vic Jr heads and used that money for a brand new set of AFR 220 Renegade heads with 72cc chambers in order to lower the compression just a bit (9.5:1). Been helping build a few turbo cars (both LS swaps), now I'm gonna get to work on mine using the PiMP xs for a management system.

That sounds like it going to be way fast! Those are the heads I also have for my build, as far as I could figure out they should fit the ticket. Are your piston dished at all? I will be using my T-Trim again but have been keeping my eye out for a YSI just in case. I also have the nitrous kit which by the sounds of it I'll need to keep up with you.
Oh, who's turbo's are you going with and what size, I've been giving them also a little thought.

The pistons are dished -22cc Wiseco's. I've settled on going twin 67's w/meth and air to air. As far as brand that's still up in the air right now. Planning to tune it for pump gas 93 while doing all the fab work (hot/cold) at home. Looking forward to getting in the garage again and getting started soon, as you probably know it's been a long time dream of mine. I look forward to updates on your build, and will be checking in from time to time.
