Mikes 302 to 351w Swap.

Figured i would start a thread of my build...

First is a picture of my ride when the rear axle swap and engine swap started.
Picked up a rear axle with 3.73's already installed so i could swap out my 3.08 gears. Had a friend pack the trac lock in the rear axle for me.

Lastly is my girlfriend helping with the rust removal process.

Two pictures of what the car looked like when i picked it up. Ran awful, super cold blooded, nasty surging idle. I actually made it all the way home to Central New York, from Philadelphia, Pa.

This is an engine out of a 1994 Ford Lightning pickup. Paid a little over $500. Running with 132K miles.

Some steps forward, even more back.
Had a friend come over to swap out the valve springs, and realized the cylinders when pressurized leaked out the valves badly! Heads needed a rebuild. So i sold them and got a sweet deal on aftermarkets.

Thanks!
The 351w came with the tubular GT-40 intake, and i actually like the looks of it. So im thinking for now of running it. But in the back of my mind i was thinking of selling the GT-40 and going trick flow. Going to get the 65mm Lightning throttle body to work on my mustang also to replace the stocker.

Also installed a TFS-1 cam in this engine.

I am going to run my T5. But while the engine is out im going to pull it also. When the car is cold it grinds from 2nd to 3rd gear, but fine when warm. So the plan is to refresh it at least, or possibly upgrade. Not sure yet.

I need to get looking for a forged dizzy gear from my EFI dizzy since i changed it to a roller cam and lifters.

Back in 2001 when I first put my 351 combo together I also ran the GT-40 upper and lower and I always lacked the performance that I desired. Please donít think I am telling you what to do but I think that intake will choke those big heads, I have ran the trick flow and the edelbrock rpm 2 and they both performed very much the same on my street application. I would suggest if you have the money thatís where I would put it. I am also running the trick flow stage 1 cam but I have worked 1970 model iron heads and it is a fun little street combo. Keep the pics coming!

Hey ill take any advice i can get. Im sure you are right about the intake. I might sell it for a start to a trick flow. Thats what i would get if i went aftermarket. Will my fuel rail work with the truck flow?

I might have found another issue. I got a used 351w dizzy for efi and its real hard to turn. I dont know if i want to put the money into swapping the gear on it. I really think i need another dizzy. But i dont want to spend the cash.. I maean it takes some muscle to turn this dizzy!

I used my stock 302 fuel rails with all my intakes, you will just have to cut the factory hose off of it and put on longer hose (as the 351w intakes are wider). Your dizzy should turn vey easy by hand, if you are putting that kind of effort into turning it I would replace it. I went to napa and bought a dizzy for a 1990 f150 with a 5.8l/351w (tfi mounted on dizzy, NOT REMOTE). But if you do this you will still have to change the gear as they come with cast gears and not the steel gear you need.

edit: got a cowl hood yet to fit all that motor under?

Thanks, i was starting to think about that when 92LX recommended a larger intake.

My MAF housing is a 70 MM one so it would work good with a 70 MM throttle body.

Ok thanks i will let you know, rather would go for the whole set so I don't have to worry about chasing around for the other half. Will see if i can find a lower.

I will have to check out the flow between the TF street and TF track intake

I actually have the 351w fuel rails, this engine came complete. So they should bolt right up then.

The dizzy is definitely hard to turn, i will look into getting a replacement. I actually have and old 302 dizzy with steel gear. Can i just give it to a shop and tell them to put the steel gear on the 351w dizzy? Save me the 35 bucks for a new gear. Or are they not re-useable? The dizzy that came with the 351w is the remote mount module, so its useless.

I actually do have a hood. Its a total piece of crap, but i bought it for 25 bucks because i knew this thing was not going to fit. If you look back in post 14, picture 2. There is the hood i got, it needs some fiberglass work, but for now it will let me drive the car when its done till i find a nice 2.5'' cowl, thats what i really want.

Some progress last night. Got all my dizzys together, the yellow one is 302 (donor steel gear), remote mount 351w, and 351w that i need however is real tough to turn.

Got the timing cover on and water pump. Made sure to use a good but of gasket maker and hope for no leaks.

Also a pic of the old harmonic balancer, the rubber is cracked, so a replacement is in order.

I did some searching and got some flow numbers on intakes:

GT40-197 cfm
TF street- 245 cfm
TF track- 265 cfm
TF R- 290 cfm
Vic jr- 320
Edel. RPM II- 260 cfm

Since the heads are 210 cc i should prolly go with as much flow as i can. I really want the trick flow R, but i cant afford 700 for an intake... Any opinions?

I have never used 351w rail, I kept my stock rails so I could retain the factory snap/plug that goes to the fuel rails under the car. Might be best to decide on an intake and then see what rail suit you the best.

As long as the shaft size on the 351 dizzy is the same as the shaft size on the 302 then all you have to do is tap out the roll pin from the gear, pull the gear off and slide it up on the 351 dizzy then reinstall pin.

You can use the remote mount dizzy but it will require you to modify your factory wiring harness. It would be easier to get the correct dizzy, but it can be done.

Vic jr- 320
Edel. RPM II- 260 cfm

Since the heads are 210 cc i should prolly go with as much flow as i can. I really want the trick flow R, but i cant afford 700 for an intake... Any opinions?
Since you do not mind chinese castings, check out the typoon intake for the 351. They are comparable to the eddy rpm 2 and much cheaper.

I guess i will hold the 351w rail up to mine to see if the fuel in and out are in the same vacinity. I dont like the idea od changing the harness to remote mount so i will try and vet a replacement.
