question about detonation

im almost positive my car is pinging. i had it in for a tranny problem and the dealer informed me it was pinging too. my only problem is im not sure what it sounds like. the sound i hear is when im idling with the windows down i hear what sounds like sand being poured through a metal pipe or something. if i put it in neutral whenidling and rev it slowly this sound gets louder as if there is now rocks mixed in with that sand. also ihear it really well if i have the o/d on and am going about 40 mph uphill. i refuse to use 93 ocatane since these vehicles are supposed to run on 87.....whats everyone think?

yeah but like i said, i shouldnt have to spend the extra money on 93.....the car is supposed to run fine on regular unleaded. and i did put a half tank of 93 in to see if it would work. it still makes the sound

Hope you have your warranty still. Could be as easy as a fouled MAF, or as bad as low compression. Sorry to hear about it but definitely get it checked out ASAP as things will only go downhill quickly if you leave it like that.

pinging

My 96GT used to ping all the time, then I went for the first solution and ran the high octane in it for 3 months. Went back to 87 and it hasn't come back. Hope this helps.

I have never heard of a car pinging at idle. Most if not all cars that are pinging will do so under load. Are you sure you are not hearing a bad idler pulley bearing or something ? Try taking your belt off and start it for a min to see if the sound is still there.

Yep, it won't "ping" (detonate) at idle, or at low load. You need to be close to WOT for that. You are hearing something else. Pinging sounds like a diesel engine.

Sounds like you have an exhaust leak. They're the most common thing when peeps think their engine is pinging, even happened to me. Do you hear it more next to a building or going over a bridge? Turn the car on then get under with a piece of rubber hose and listen through it and point it at and again where your headers meet your h-pipe, then work your way back up to the engine. You'll find the culprit in no time.
