Question What Speedo Comp Method Do YOU Use In Your 96-98?

So I'm finally going to put my 4.30 gears in that have been sitting in the garage for a year and a half. I'm looking for the best speedo comp system available. Right now I've got 3.73's in there with the ford red 21 tooth speedo gear. Somebody once said they used a dodge speedo gear for their 4.30's and it was perfect. A white 24 tooth or some craziness. So what is everyone using these days?

I use the Dallas Mustang Speed Cal...$80 at Brother's Performance...15-20 min install if you are handy with tools and have a floor jack...

How does that thing work? Is it like the Sean Hyland or something? Is it accurate?

Well, now that I found out that I have 3.73's instead of 3.55's before I bought it...it works really well...timed myself between 2 mile markers and it was right at 60 sec with my cruise set on 60mph...all it took was a few dip switch flips and it fixed the 3.55-3.73 problem...

They are upgrading the software to fix a problem people were having with the cruise surging, but they replaced mine with a new one and they said they will have the rest ready to go in about a week....works great otherwise now...

I don't know how the Sean Hyland unit works but I'm sure it's similar...

goto Dallas Mustang and they show installation and they also have a calculator that lets you know what the dip swich settings are supposed to be with your tire and gear setup...you can also get a hold of TriBlkCobra on here and he can answer any questions...he's the developer of the unit...

I have the Hyland & cannot use my cruise. It also cuts out the speedo at about 80mph. I called them about it when I 1st put it in 2 years ago after fighting with 2 of their different mechanical compensators that would not fit my 'vert. I was just so pissed that I said F-it! & have lived with it ever since.

Glenn, you dont have to live with that. We are currently testing a new software load for the SpeedCal's which addresses cruise issues for some users of the Abbott (same as the Hyland...) and the SpeedCal. Both units have had issues with cruise with a small number of people. Right now all results look good with no issues. So... there is an option.

BTW, no I didnt vote... wouldnt be right now would it?

Thanks Tri-Black, this is good news.

It was suggested to me that I did not have it grounded properly or that my connections sucked, I checked that but it did not help.

How would I get the software load, mail my compensator somewhere? Replace it with a newer one?

Glenn, the software load is for the SpeedCal which I designed. Since your using an Abbott they are not compatible, sorry...

Ok, so I could buy a Speedcal, which would replace my Hyland which would work right?

Other. On my 98GT 5 speed, I have the speedo gear. It works fine but is about 5% off. I can live with it this way.

I'm installing SpeedCal today to correct for 4.10's, and throwing the white 23 tooth away. One nice thing about the SpeedCal is you can fine tune for tire sizes, which can affect speedo by 1-2%. If I have cruise control problems, I'll be contacting TriBlk. I'm using red 21 tooth to partially correct, then SpeedCal for the rest. http://www.dallasmustang.com/speedcal.htm

When using a SpeedCal, do you have to have a working drive gear? If the speedo gear I am using disintegrates, can I just slap the SpeedCal on w/o replacing anything else?
Thanks.

mrvax, you still have to have a functioning VSS sensor which means the gear needs to be functional. The electronic adapters go between the VSS and the PCM and rescale the VSS period to match the new gears.

Ralph, if it gives you any trouble let me know.

Glenn, I'm sorry but yes that appears that's what your options are.

Thanks, TriBlack. Do you think I should go and try to get a "stock" gear to put back in there if my 23 tooth turns to sawdust? I just don't know what most people do when the gear grenades.
Thanks.

Sorry Marcus, on 96-98 you cant recomp the speedo in the PCM, has to be done via gear or electronic adapter.

Glenn, currently we are 100% on fixing problematic units with the software update. At least one person is running 4.56's with no issues. I understand your hesitation since you've already got an electronic adapter and dont care to buy another one. All I can say is I dont see any problem and if it doesnt work (and I cant figure out how to make it work...) return it and get your money back. It does seem like a PITA though since you've already got an electronic adapter...

Well it looks like I'm going with the Dallas Mustang comp. I'll probably order it in a week or so. All the bugs have been worked out, right? As far as the cruise and all that?
