Question H or X pipe with Flowmasters

I tried doing a search cause I figured it would be here but it didn't help much. I would like to know which is better sounding and better for performance? I just got Flowmasters and are going on this weekend but I was wondering about the pipe. I also would like to get rid of the Cats bacause from what I know this also restricts flow and HP. So basically what am I looking to spend for a decient H or X pipe and to remove or gut the Cats and how much of a HP gain total with pipe, no cats and flowmasters???

Go with an H with the flows. I got mine from www.dallasmustang.com for $128 shipped to my door. Ask for the uncoated Mac 2 1/2" H-pipe. You'll love the sound. It should sound like an old musclecar. You may see 8-12 RWHP over the stock catted H. That's just an estimate btw...

Don't use an X with the flows. I had an O/R X withthe Mac cat-back and it sounded like pure arse.

Another vote for the H. Go for a Mac like ArticSnake said. It'll sound real nice.

That's a good price, but you've got a 2V. They make a lot more parts (like higher quantities of each part) for you guys than they do for us 4V guys. That let's them justify a WAY jacked up price.

I wish we could get them that cheap. Well, the BBK's that is. I'll steer clear of the 4V Mac LT's after all the posts about that ordeal.

Just keep the "rule of thumb" in mind: "X with straight through mufflers & an H with chambered mufflers"

-Most people would agree on the above rule of thumb, but some like mixed "combinations," it all depends on your tastes. Goodluck with it.

I have the Mac offroad "H" with the Borla XR1 catback (straight thru) mufflers and love the sound! I also had some hi-flo cats welded in cause it was far too loud for me, just personal preference.

I don't like the "rule of thumb" and it's sometimes good to be a little different. I started out with same Mac "H" with 2 chamber flowmasters but got tired of the nasty drone and hack saw'd them off... again, personal preference.

BBK o/r H-pipe w/ no cats and flowmasters has got to be the best combo out there. I can provide the vid if you like to hear how it sounds.

If you want to hear an x-pipe w/flows go to the midwest forums and go to New pictures of blue stangs car. Click on the link and it also has a sound file. I love the x-pipe with flows. Most of my friends around here run that combo.

I had a catted Bassani X until the cats decided to take a #####. I had them cut off and straight pipe welded in their place. Sounded fine with the cats on, with the cats off...well, my roomate described it best as saying, "Sounds like you're dragging a bunch of tin cans behind your car when the RPM's drop as the car coasts down".

Another vote for O/R H and chambered mufflers (Mac, Flowmaster, etc.)

Go with the MAC Off Rd hpipe. And try ordering it from Dallas Mustangs. I would also recommend, at the same time order the MIL eliminators. Your engine light might not come on at first, but after a couple miles, it comes on.

I also HAD a Bassani-X w/cats and 2-chamber Flows (Delta-Flows) until one of the cats went bad... and I really liked the sound A LOT - both tone and volume level. I've heard that the O/R X and Flows sounds nasty, but my X w/cats and Flows sounded great. Anyway, I've got the stock H back on there now until I can decide what to do. I'm not buying another Bassani cat pipe. Looks like my options are:

1) Have the Bassani cats replaced and bolt the X back on
2) Gut the Bassani cats, weld in sections of pipe in their place, and go with different mufflers and/or cat-back
3) Get an O/R H and keep the Flows

Since we don't have emissions checks here, I'm leaning toward the O/R H. I just don't want it to be TOO loud.

Poe -

I was in your exact situation about 4 months ago. Go with the O/R H, you'll be happy. It's quieter than the O/R X was with the Mac cat-back.

It sounds like most people prefer the H pipe with the flows. Does anyone have any sound bites or anything? I have heard a couple but the sound quality is not that good making all the types sound too much alike. If someone has a site with good differences then let me know.

HOW ABOUT WITH MAGNAFLOWS???? these are already on the car so I figured I would leave them there. They aren't that loud though. I want the really deep bass but also better performance. So what pipe now fellas?

I also "HAD" a catted Bassani. One of the cats took a poop. I had straight pipe welded in. Sounds like a diesel truck now . I'm buying new cats soon. I lost alot of low end because of removing them. Plus I'd like to pass the visual inspection. The catted X does sound great with the flows. I wish I could hear an offroad X with the Magnapack exhaust. L8R

well, i know people get tired of the "how does this sound?" stuff, because it really is subjective. but, having had a few different intermediate pipes with my longtubes and 2 chamber flows, ill give you my impressions.

bbk h pipe with cats...sounded very good. musclecar like, for sure. cats went south, so i gutted them....

bbk h pipe, gutted cats...wild. like a nascar. those hollowed cats really resonated badly. too much. felt like i lost power up top. maybe the hollowed out area disrupted flow.

vrs x pipe with cats...very nice. a little more mutted than h pipe with cats. neat sound, more sophisticated? my favorite.

bbk off-road h pipe...musclecar sound, moreso than the same pipe with cats, not nearly as bad as h with gutted cats. i smell like gas. my car smells like gas. good power.

hows that?

This is the .wav file that made me want Flowmasters! I love the way your car sounds. I constantly read these comments about Flows:

1.) they actually hurt performance, or at least do not allow for as much of a gain when combined with other mods such as straight-thru muffler designs.

2.) they drone like mad.

So, where's your drone-zone, if any? Although I'm not sure what to believe about the "performance" loss with Flows, I think I could live with a little less hp to "gain" that classic muscle car - loud-but-not-to-loud-but-ready-to-explode sound that is just plain killer on mustangs IMHO!!! Your input will help me determine whether or not I buy some 2.5" weld-in Deltaflow 2-chambers (40 series??)

Unless your putting out a serous amount of power, I doubt the flows will cost you much if any at all. As for the drone, I have the 30 series cat back(3 chamber) and there is hardly any drone, just a tad around 2200 rpm.

I also vote for the o/r-H, Im putting on BBK LT's and o/r-H later this summer, so I will tell you how that goes, and try to get a sound clip if anyone wants to hear it.

Also, the 30 series dont sound quite the same as the 40 series does, its alittle deeper with less drone and a bit quieter. They still have the great muscle car sound, but with alittle more rumble to it. Not sure how to put it exactly.
