Didn't know if it's been mentioned, i've just been browsing lately, but I've seen a lot of gripes about the 390 hp rating.

I for one am very happy considering, they have dropped the compression from 9.85 to 1 to 8.5 to 1.

I was running 17.5 psi at somewhere between 10.0 to 10.5 to 1 compression.

With the forged internals and the lower compression, there shouldn't be a problem adding 6 to 8 psi on top of what the factory is giving you.

A lot of L's are running 14 to 16 psi now with no problems and we have the long unforged rod.

I'm running about 10 lbs. of boost with a KB for about 15,000 miles. As long as you get a good dyno tune, you should be fine.

By the way, my car now has 90,000 miles total on it.

Jimmy V. is running the same boost, and has been for even longer than I have been.

Is it 390 flywheel or rear wheel hp?? If its flywheel hp you will end up with 340 to 350 rwhp which is pretty good for a Stang right off the show room floor. But for the price of $35,000 to $37,000 I wouldnt give it a second look only because the way Ford is with thier warranties. you wont be able to look at the engine without getting the warranty voided. But on the other hand if its 390 rwhp then I would consider it because my 98 Cobra is paid off this coming July... "THANK GOD"!! DA Snake Boy!!!

As I mentioned in the other post going, I still don't think it's an LS1 killer. It'll run equal to the 01-02 LS1's. The thing that's gonna kill this car is the added weight. Probably at least 200 lbs more than the current cobra. Iron block, 6 spd, blower, and bigger wheels. 390 Flywheel comes out to about 335 RWHP. Also I hope the 6 spd they use is the one with the 2.97 1st gear. The dealer markups are gonna be pretty hefty so I'd expect to pay at least 1-2k over sticker. These are gonna be hot, so saleman aren't gonna budge. With minor mods like a tune, a pulley, exhaust, MAF, power pipe etc, this thing will be a monster, but stock for stock it's only gonna run WITH the LS1, not past it. My friend ran 12.66 at 110 with his bone stock on nittos 01 WS6.

Have you considered all the extra TQ this car is goona have down low? It is not just HP that is going to win races.

As far as 200 lbs additional, it will still weigh less then a 5.8L.

Beefcake> Quick question for you bud>On your cobra> what pulley were you running with the S trim to see that kind of boost and what kind of power did you pull rw before you sold the car?
I am just curious because I am having HCI build my motor right now and am curious what to expect?

Thanks for any info or help!!!

Yeah I figured that too but it's also gonna come out to 335 RWTQ which is very close to what the LS1's are putting out right now. Going by HP/Weight ratio the LS1 and new Cobra are gonna be very similar. I'm basing the weight not just on the iron block. You have to factor in the tranny beeing heavier, the bigger wheels, and the blower too. That adds up fast. But it is only a pulley and tune away from lights out performance.

And don't forget the exhaust. It'll probably have 4 cats and restrictive mufflers etc. Bolt on aftermarket exhaust = 355- 360rwhp? Then pulley, tune, 390-400rwhp?

I'm getting excited

I think he had the 2.87" pulley but he was shifting at 7500 rpm. RWHP was in the 560 range with the auto. Probably closer to 600 with a standard.

Well, it would be nice if Ford offered the 03 Cobra short block for sale, that way you can buy a forged internal stuffed engine from the Ford parts department.

No, the Iron block added about 70 lbs to the weight of the 4.6 DOHC. The engine in this car now weighs in around 590 lbs, which makes it heavier than the iron block 351W.
Even before the switch the weight of the 2 engines were nearly identical.

in the new 5.0 mag it said that they dyno tested a 03 and it made 360 to the back tire stock and then they had another there with no exhaust on it so they bolted up a bassani x-pipe and it made 400 to the back tire. if these reports are correct you are looking at a tone more power with a exhaust, pulley, and dyno tune.

Blah Blah Blah i am a ford guy with to many of them to list.... turbo mustang turbo lincoln, powerstroke tow rig! just to name a few.

Judging by the dynoing of this car by a few different sources, the car is making 360RWHP stock, remove exhaust(AKA Cork), made 400 RWHP.

When I get mine, bring a stock LS1 around, I'll spank it! (all in fun)
