Brother and I purchased an 01 GT that had a busted oil filter. car was ran low on oil and had what we thought was a knock at first. We read about lash adjusters and thought hey we will try that first.
Replaced 3 of them one day and magically there was no more noise. We put the car back together and the noise came back immediately but was less pronounced. Definitely sounded like it was coming from the rear of the intake just about the drivers side rear cylinder.
Here's what we have done:
Replaced all lash adjusters in DS head.
Removed egr and noise still there
removed rear 4 lash adjusters and started car with front 4 adjusters in it and noise still there
Tightened all plugs on that side of motor
Also have replaced 3 in the passenger side head. Now the noise sounds like it's in the top end of the motor behind the alternator or near the top of the intake. It's a constant tick tick tick tick tick and progresses with rpm.
Do we waste our time pulling the front cover and checking the timing chain tensioners?
I don't feel like its a bearing because it was quiet when we did the first 3 lifters. And it doesn't sound as violent as most bad bearings do. Car is holding perfect oil pressure too.
The only other issue we are running into is the drive belt tensioner isn't holding tension and has started bouncing with the car running. I can't imagine this is related but we are open to suggestions at this point.
