8.8 rear end in 85 mustang?

So I bought an 85 GT convertible. It’s a 2 owner completely stock, unmolested car. When I got under it, I expected to see a 7.5 rear. What I saw is an 8.8 3.08 limited slip on the rear end tag and the other tags on the car match the 3.08 LS. The rear end looks like it’s been under there for a long time. Did they put an 8.8 in any 85’s or was this a case of the stock rear end failed while under warranty and was replaced with an 8.8?

I would wager that it is the latter. Sounds like a great score, lets see this bad boy

I originally bought the car for the drivetrain and front end to fix my wrecked 85 coupe. After getting it home, it was way to good to cut up. My Father in law was a body man so the damaged quarters didn’t scare him. 1200.00 for the car, needs a top and interior. Should be in paint in two weeks. I’m thrilled with it so far.

From everything I’ve seen, they didn’t start putting 8.8’s in them until 1986.
I’ve been wrong before

Post the tag. Typically there is a date code on the tag itself that can ID when the rear was built.

3.08s were a factory option for 5-spds

You're right except the SVO still came with the 7.5" including the '86.

So I looked up the tag info, looks like a build date of Dec 14 1987
Happy it’s there, even if the 7.5 would be plenty.
