New Corbeau GTSII Seats sit way too high. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a set of Corbeau GTS II seats with corbeau seat tracks. I must say they feel awesome, but they sit way too high on my 1993 Mustang GT.

I am 6 foot tall and my knees hit the steering wheel no matter what I do. Also my head is nearly touching the roof. I had high hopes and now I have big doubts that I will be able to use this set of seats at all.

I see Corbeau does offer seat base shaving which would shave off 1 inch from the base, however, I am not sure if that is even enough for what i need. I would think I need more than an inch but I could be wrong.

I wanted to make this post to see if anyone got any suggestions or any first hand experience on how to fix this issue before I decide to offload them and look for something else.

You are gonna have to make your own brackets. I had to with my Sparco seats. Its not too terrible hard, just a bit fiddly. Simple 1 square tubing and a Harbor Freight welder will do the trick.

Sell them and buy some used Recaro's along with planted bases or wedge. I'm 6'5" and with the old style Wedge bracket I have extra head room with a helmet on and extra leg room.

I had the same issue with that brand when I tried them a decade or so ago. They also turn purple in a short time.

I'm 6'1" and looked into the same exact GTSII's. I wanted the black ones with silver inserts. I sat in a set (with corbeau sliders) and instantly decided not to pursue them anymore. When i called, the "shaved base" option was quoted to me to only reduce the height by 1/2" or so. Still wasn't enough for me IMHO. I was looking to drop down 2" or so from where i currently was located in my SN95 seats.

Custom built seat mounts would have been the solution, but may have had to forgo sliders and mount them fixed in place. I wanted sliders however.


My current setup is 80's VW Recaro seats, Planted seat bases, with Recaro sliders. I'm low now. I can tilt my steering wheel down quite a bit and not hit my knees. Now i feel like i sit IN the car.

i've got a new set of silver inserts for these i'm currently installing

Not necessarily true. I added sliders to my Sparco seats so my wife could drive the car. It raised the seats to an undrivable height. I lowered modified the brackets to lower them to their original height. The result was fantastic.

And this is my track car no less, so the seating position must be perfect. Numerous sized drivers are sent out in the car and everyone is able to get comfortable.

You need to just get out in the garage and start test fitting, cutting and welding. It can be done.

Thanks guys for the inputs! Very helpful, however, I must say I do not have a welder. I need to pick up one and start practicing ASAP, but was hoping for some kind of a bolt on solution. I guess I have $950ish worth pile of crap LOL

The Recaros in Mustang5L5 look so good!

I reached out Corbeau and they suggested that any reputable local upholstery shop should be able to shave the seat for me. I guess I am holding out some hope that with shaved base and a custom bracket I will be able to use them. I guess I should try this before spending a lot more money on another set of seats.

I got the seats from a local guy as an open box item. Those are the leather version and do they turn purple too? I suppose that applies to Vinyl, but not sure about the leather? I bought the corbeau brackets brand new from CJ Pony Parts. Perhaps I should look into returning them.

Thanks for all of the input! Those Recaros look awesome and looks like they are quite low to the ground.

I do not have a welder nor the skills yet I need to pick one up soon. I was looking for some kind of a bolt on solution if possible.

I reached out Corbeau and they said any reputable local shop should be able to shave the seats. I am hoping that after shaving seats and finding someone to create me a custom bracket will get me low enough to keep those corbeaus. I got the seats as an open box set from local wholesaler but I got the sliders brand new from CJPP which I think I can just return them.

Also the seats I have are leather, not vinyl. Will the leather turn purple?

I have never seen the leather turn purple only the cloth, you should be fine should you use them. Do you think you can resell them for what you paid? $950 gets you a good start on the way to Recaro's.

Used Recaro's $500 (they can be found for much less)
Sliders $270 (new)
Planted bases $280 (new)

Total $1050

If you want them recovered an outfit on eBay, zoomzooming or some such, makes a quality German vinyl replacement set for $500 and offers leather as well.

Cheers and good luck either way!

Leather shouldn't turn purple. Just their black cloth is know for that.


I'm into my Recaros for ~1100. Bought the donor seats for $200, and then new bolster foams and diaphragms for ~$400. Spent $350 on used/new coverings and then sold off the original fabric and some parts for $200. $280 for planted bases and bought used Recaro sliders for $100.

Couole months of parts hunting and disassembly. The seats break down easily.

Search "Recaro Trophy seats" from late 80s VWs. They are black leather with gray inserts. Can pick some decent ones up for $400-500 used and ready to bolt in with sliders and bases. There is also a gray cloth version

Literally just came in from swapping my center inserts to the lighter cloth insert from a trophy seats. Also attached is how these seats looked when I got them for $200

You seem to quite knowledgeable when it comes to those seats! $500 for recaros? show me where!? lol BTW do you happen to know if the TMI's reproduction seats also sit high like the corbeaus? I believe they are reproductions of the recaros if I am not mistaken?

I really need to hunt around for those seats.

So the recaro sliders will not make them sit high at all? And where can I find the planted bases unless you guys made this part yourselves?

These Recaros are a factory oem version of their LS-B series seat that was sold in the 80s and 90s. They came in VW Mk2 GTI/GLIs. Once you remove the factory VW base (which I then sold for $100) they are pretty much the same as the aftermarket offerings. Keep in mind though, these are 20-30 year old seats, so some resto work may been needed

They also sit low. Bracket plus sliders still puts them pretty low. Without the bases here, you can see they are almost 2" lower than the SN95 seat

But like I also said. They needed a louttle work before I could use them. The third photo shows the new bolsters and diaphragm I installed on one of the seats. A seller in the U.K. Sells parts, but with shipping, not cheap.

I searched a few months before I found my set on EBay for local pickup

I dont have any knowledge on the TMI seats, sorry.

But yes, you can find them for that or less. I just missed out on a set for $100 and they had the super 80d mesh headrests, should have driven the 3 hours still kicking myself for that one.

If you use the craigslist app it lets you search nationwide.

Thanks guys! Let's say I am hunting for a set now! I will return the corbeau seat tracks - I will come back if I have any questions. You guys are super helpful! Thanks again! Kind of kicking myself right now for not doing this homework which i could have used the $900 I spent on getting the Corbeaus. Either way I should be able to get all of my money back by returning and selling the seats to perhaps SN95 or New Edge owners. Do they fit better in the newer mustangs?

Unsure, but i don't think you'll have any issue selling them. I've seen them installed in plenty of cars. When i wanted to try a set, i had no problem finding someone with them in a fox to sit in.


FYI, here's a source for some of the parts i needed for my resto. They do sell on ebay for slightly cheaper. I also joined a few Recaro restoration groups on FB. You might even be able to find an aftermarket pair that needs absolutely no work done at all

Welp, that was not long.... After creating my last post, I found a pair in Annapolis (45 mins from me) that seemed like a great starting point.. I just nabbed them for $350 and got back home recently. They sure feel awesome when sitting into them! The black one definitely is mint while the ripped up one is still decent. I just need a re-upholstery kit then I might tackle it myself or pay someone to do it.

Only thing that is different between those two is the reclining knob is triangular on one and circular knob on another.

Wow you did an amazing job! I am mechanically inclined, but not sure if fabrics/seats are something I want to tackle haha.

I will look into this website. Did you get the reupholstery kit from them too?

Sorry for the stupid question, but do you mean you bought the planted seat base and attached it to the recaro sliders?

An ebay seller I spoke to said he used modified 93 mustang seat track on top of 93 mustang sliders and it worked well height-wise, etc. I am wondering if that is true? I think I can source a pair of 93 tracks and sliders locally on the cheap side.

Nice pickup.

They are slightly different seats. Left one is a Recaro LX-B, and the right one is a Recaro SE which was sold in the late 90's and early 2000's. The SE was based on the LX seat, but if you look at the top foam area, they are shaped slightly differently. Keep this in mind when your source out covering materials. Other than that the bases should be the same and everything should bolt in fine.

The triangle knob is typically on the newer seats. The Recaro Specialist is the currect gen recaro that was based on the LX, which became the SE and now the specialist.

Lseat is legit, although i'm not too sure about the quality.

The russian might be using borowed pics (I think i've seen them elsewhere) but i've also seen the bolster foam he sells and it's pretty much the same that capital seating sells, but cheaper.


This guy is well known for his recaro covers. You can google search "Zoom zoom zooming" for reviews and feedback.

I was too at first. Thought it was some sort of art and i'd never get them back together, but this is my first time tackling seats, and as you can see by the above pics...i did fine.

It's basically a sandwich. The recaro sliders bolt to the seats, and then you bolt the planted bases to the sliders. Whole thing then bolts to the floor.

Here's the Planted tech base bolted to the floor. The sliders would then bolt to 4 of the holes on the very edges of this base. Seat bolts to the slider

My kit is factory recaro centers i bought used and cleaned, and a unknown jacket kit i purchased from an individual who never installed it.
That is awesome. I am moving to San Diego in less than a month and this guy is based in Seal Beach which is not too far from where I will be. So It looks like I will focus on getting the correct brackets so I can use them in my vehicle and then I can get them re-done when I am near this guy in California.

Yes sir! however it is the one with tabs so it looks like I wont be able to use them considering I need the ones without the tabs... they got the tabs so I am not sure how I can use them.

If I am able to use it then any idea where can i find a base that would accommodate to the tabs? I could also buy 2 new non tabbed racero sliders and sell the ones with tabs.

Brings me to next question - I am wondering if I could ditch the recaro sliders and use the universal sliders I bought brand new from Corbeau? Clearly it wont fit as is but I am wondering if anyone makes an adapter that would mate the recaro seats to those universal seat sliders?

You could call wedge and ask them if they still produce that tab style frame, I have their older bases with the tabs in my car.

Capital Seating sells the upper bolster foam in the period correct shape and the zoom zoom fella can make kits for that shape. Before I replaced any good foam I would email zoom zoom and ask if he has patterns for your current foam.

I could ask them but I think I would like matching bases on both drivers and passengers seats.

I am thinking about just cutting the tabs off and drill my own hole it it is that simple. Need to observe the brackets when I get into garage later tonight.

I think the only difference in the tabbed vs no tabs is the actual tabs. Once you cut them off, pretty much the same as NT.

Foam might be the same really. Subtle differences in the shape (i think the headrests might be slightly different) might not be that noticeable. You have the seats in front of you though so it might be easier for you to notice if there are differences. I haven't had an SE in front of me to compare.
