well i am no expert but I am looking into doing a 393 also. From the most part its a 3.85 stroke crank with 351w rods and 302 pistons so would still be using a 351w head.
Now I have seen were people are using other length rods don't know what the advantage/disadvantage would be.

I personally would be interested in knowing what kind of work should be done at the machine shop as far as getting the block ready. What has to be done, what should be done and what can be skipped.

83 351w block .30 over

no notching required for 393,some use a long rod and some use the short rod,i thought stroke was 3.75 but main thing at machine shop, need to convert it for roller cam.

Honestly having done the 393W, I think you'll be happier with a 408W. And it won't cost you any more than it would to build a 393W of the same caliber of parts. Just my .02

A 393 is a 3.85 stroke crank that uses a 5.95 rod and a piston with a 302 pin height. Other rod/piston height combos are out there, but this is the most common it seems. A flat top piston with a 60cc head yields some healthy 12 to 1+ compression ratios depending on valve relief and how high the piston is in the bore.
What you'll need is: 351 headers for a fox(I'm assuming that's what you have), a 351 fox style oil pan(available still from FRPP), a 351 lower intake(they differ from the 302), some sort of retro lifters if you want to run a roller cam and your block is not a 351 roller block, 1/2" head studs or bolts, longer pushrods, extend the hose on your stock fuel rails-front and rear(this is easy to do), and a distributor for a windsor to work with TFI(if you are going EFI). If you are running a hydraulic roller camshaft, then the distributor will need to have a steel distributor gear on it. Hope this helps. I drove a 500 rwhp 393 on the street for about 2 years, and loved every minute of it. It was a stupid fast car.
