Best option for replacing a A9L

I’ve got a Factory Five Cobra that currently runs on the stock A9L

Engine is 347 with red tops and a Pro M 90mm mass air and Accufab 75mm TB.

Car runs great but I have noticed it runs better when first started and cold.

I’d like to have it tuned but will consider swapping to a different engine management system. I know i will have to pay for some sort of “chip” or someway to alter the factory tune so maybe a system that’s tuneable will be more cost effective in the long run.

I’ve looked at MS and some other systems just curious. About the best option.

Will never change engine combos and I know the A9L could fail at anytime since it’s old technology and they are getting harder to find.

Best is really subjective. Engine running performance and characteristics can be identical with any of the common systems. The fact that it runs better cold may have nothing to do with the programming.

Are you going to be messing with it or someone else?
How much difficulty are you willing to accept with the system?
How much is cost a factor?
How do you want to use the vehicle?

I’ve tuned my other vehicle with a MS3X.

It’s a 6.0LS with a turbo. I really didn’t have any issues there.

Car is occasional driver. Maybe 200 miles a year.

There is zero support in my area for Megasquirt so I’d be on my own but as I’ve said I tuned the other car no problem.

Since you are already running a MAF system I would look into the pro m system. It requires minimal tuning to have an OEM quality Ecu.

if youre just looking for tuning, the moates quarterhorse is a great inexpensive option that you can tune yourself. Based on what you have listed there is going to be no advantage to running an aftermarket ecu. The nice thing about the moates is you can datalog which you cant do with sct or diablo unless things have changed. There are free simplified base tunes available off efidynotuning.com along with good write ups and lots information on the page. 250$ is all you need. Even the software, TunerPro is free...

Oh yea, regarding the possible failing ECU.. The beauty of the Moates is you can use any ecu from 87-93 mustang and just slap the chip in... Also, 90% of ECU failure is due to the 3 or 4 capacitors... Replace those and odds are your ecu wont fail any time soon.

In that case I would stick with Megasquirt. The main drawback is the learning curve, that's not a thing for you. MSnS-Extra will do the job very inexpensively with less features, MS3X will do it with a full set of features but some more cost but still without the cost of the commercial names.

The only reason to use something else in your position is if you just want someone else to tune it this time. In that case I would then suggest you find the local person you want to tune it and run whatever that person recommends for the best results.

Pro m meters come set up rich. Also there are people that can repair A9L's, I just had mine done and they went through it for 115.00. You said you're not changing combos for awhile, then get it tuned with a chip and be done with it. There's a guy in NC powercurve motorsports that tunes stock computers really well.

Do you have any friends that have a different system?

Do any shops around you tune any of the systems you are looking at?

My 2 cents are thats your answer. More support/help you have the better and easier it will be and the better the tune will be. I have the MS PNP system and I like it
