All of the '89-93 EEC-IV computers (generally speaking A9L, A9P, X3Z, A3M, etc.) run what is known as Ford's GUFB engine control strategy. Any of these computers can run any other calibration, ie. an X3Z computer can run A9P, however a tuning device is required. Something like the TwEECer, Moates Quarterhorse, etc.
If you're not planning to tune and you're currently running A9L and thinking about swapping to an X3Z ('93 Cobra), think twice. The X3Z is tuned to use 24 lb injectors, so the BBK MAF calibration will cause some problems.
