MSD 6530 install

Just doing some electrical work on my project, hooked up my MSD 6530 box. The two heavy power and ground wires straight to the battery, switch 12v is hooked up. When I turn the key on, the box blinks twice, then goes out. Is this normal? No distributor or coil are on the car yet.

Ground should go body

Power should come off solenoid

Never go straight to battery

Light codes nead to be checked with msd

MSD instructs to run 10ga power and ground from the box directly to power and ground posts on the battery. There is a separate 12v switched source wire. 2blinks means nothing more than the box is receiving under 12v. my battery isn't charged.

and I am telling you it is wrong to go to the battery directly.

charge your battery then

89 GT gr-40, KB2200(10psi), tweecer R/T,LC-1, 22gal cell, w/tailpipes.

I did charge the battery, that fixed the below 12v indication light. As far as the wiring goes, I'm just following MSD's instructions. I don't yet know enough about electrical systems to argue about how it should be hooked up or to deviate from instructions.

"Ignition supply wire, 14-gauge. Connects to battery positive (+) terminal or battery junction. Note: Do not connect to the alternator.
Ignition ground, 14-gauge. Connect to battery negative (-) terminal or engine block."


"LED
The LED on the side of the MSD monitors several operating conditions of the MSD. If the LED indicates that there is a problem with the ignition system, follow the steps through the Troubleshooting section. The LED will appear to be on steady at above idle speeds when everything is functioning roperly.
•When 12volts are applied to the small Redwire, the LED will turn on to indicate power.
•When cranking or running, the LED will blink for each trigger signal.
•Code2 will flash for low battery voltage.
•Code3 will flash for high battery voltage.
•Code4 will flash for converter off(ignition problem)."

boostup89...go take a look under the hood of any car, especially a newer one, and count how many wires are hooked up to the negative side of the battery. You will find only one, the ground cable. A new car with multiple control modules, countless electronic controls covering every aspect of vehicle operation and there will be only a single ground cable at the battery. Ever wonder why?

So are you saying to disregard MSD's instructions? I'm not sure I follow. I'm not that savy when it comes to automotive electrical systems, but I can follow instructions to a "T" so that's what I did.

MSD does not trust anyone to install a proper ground wire to the chassis or body, so the fall back position is to say "ground it at the battery". Will the MSD work with a battery ground? Yes. Is it ideal, No.

I smell what your stepping in now. I just wanted to make sure that if the ignition box gave any trouble, MSD couldn't blame inproper installation (not that they have any means of checking) they are just trying to idiot proof the install. I will move to chassis ground. Thanks!!!!

On my race car I have two large Aeromotive fuel pumps, a Fast XFI 2.0 engine management system, two electric EVAC pumps, MSD 6AL2 ignition, electric water pump, electric fan, electric bosch water pump for S/C cooling, 200 amp alternator, trans brake solenoid, line lock, electronic boost controller, Rule 200 electric water pump for I/C, headlights and tail lights, power windows. Not one item is grounded at the battery. Everything works flawlessly.

Mine will have a lot less going on than that. Lol. Fuelab fuel pump, electric fans, MSD 6530, full OEM lights and windows, if I add an intercooler I'll have a pump to run water as well. Pretty bare bones.

He may have read it but, it's clearly states "or battery junction" and "or engine block". Neither power wire or ground wire need to connect directly from MSD unit to battery.

Battery should be negative/ground short heavy cable to solid clean chassis point and positive/power large protected cable to junction block or solenoid. Everything else gets distributed from there.
