Several things may be doing this;
1 - bad ground, check the terminals on the battery, both positive and negative
2 - bad battery, the battery may have been damaged with the bad alternator, if so, the new alt. can get damaged from a bad battery
3 - bad chassis ground, see if this is loose or corroded
4 - before replacing the whole cable, go to NAPA or similar and get the plug assembly that goes into the alternator, it costs around $20 or so, a lot cheaper than a new cable.
5 - bad starter or ignition, if either of these are bad, they can draw too much current and fry out the regulator in the alt or the battery itself
