Charging problem

OK, so i started the car Sat and it was running kinda rough and the battery gauge was on the low side. It eventually died and I had to jump it. I charged up the battery and it was still reading low on the guage. When hooked to a volt meter at the battery, it put 12.3v with engine off, and 12.1-2v with engine running. I picked up a new alternator and it started and ran fine. I took the car out that night, and later in the evening the dash lights were dimmer and the guage was low again. I pulled the alt and had it tested...it's fine. Anyone experience this same problem?? I'm thinking a bad wiring harness or something.

Several things may be doing this;

1 - bad ground, check the terminals on the battery, both positive and negative

2 - bad battery, the battery may have been damaged with the bad alternator, if so, the new alt. can get damaged from a bad battery

3 - bad chassis ground, see if this is loose or corroded

4 - before replacing the whole cable, go to NAPA or similar and get the plug assembly that goes into the alternator, it costs around $20 or so, a lot cheaper than a new cable.

5 - bad starter or ignition, if either of these are bad, they can draw too much current and fry out the regulator in the alt or the battery itself
