Crispy Harness Need Help!

Looking for some help on a wiring issue I'm having on my 87 GT with a 408w swap. Motor has been in and car has been running for years.

I moved the car to work on it last weekend and everything ran fine (also just dove it 15 miles no problem two weeks before). I just had a roll bar put in and I was installing some race seats. Done for the day I went to move the car back over to it's spot in the garage and it wouldn't start (fuel pump would not prime). Pushed the car in and started trying to figure it out.

I figured I bumped the fuel harness relay under the driver seat when putting the new seats/harness in but that wasn't it, then after cranking it over the passenger kick panel started to smoke. Went down there and looked to see what happened and the Green eight pin connector for the fuel pump relay pretty much melted/burned. So obviously I need to replace both the male and female ends on that if i can find new ones, but not sure why it got so hot to begin with. Another thing I noticed was the red wire that goes into that connector got red hot as soon as I turned the key to ACC.

Sorry for the lengthy description but better more info then less, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Checked the connections and they all visually looked good.

How would I check the leakage to ground?

And the current has not changed so I don't know why that would happen, unless the frying of one part caused the other part to overload?

if it melted, ITS CURRENT, it changed

leakage to ground, would be loss of potential to ground


all these tests are done with a meter, NOT VISUALLY.

Yes, visual inspection of wiring. You asked if there was a "bad connection" do i know if its shorting no, I just meant the "connections" seemed to be in tact and nothing seemed to be knocked loose during my interior revamp. What are the possible causes of overcurrent? If its not to much to ask, if it is feel free not to answer.

load that is shorting internally will draw MORE current

a couple of strands or slight touching of power to a ground, like sparking

take out measuring devices and see what you have going on.

then read post #6

if you need to know how to test, actually meter leads, let me know

I assume that people can do electrical tests, unless they tell me otherwise.

Just to help anyone else that may run into this, Indy2000 was correct.

There was a nick in one of the power wires that ran next to the drivers seat back to the fuel pump. It was touching the body and causing it to ground out. This caused the wire to heat up and find the weakest point that apparently was the green eight pin connector in the passenger foot well. It melted the connection and caused more issues.

Replaced the melted connector, replaced the piece of wire that was stripped, and all is well.
