sensor construction

I read an older thread about ACT/ECT issues. A poster claimed using Teflon tape would cause a poor, or no ground at all, causing an ECT ACT open circuit. From what I can tell, (in my limited knowledge of wiring) neither of these sensors ground through the intake manifold, but through the computer. Is this correct?
