1994 mustang gt auto backup lamps not working

Hi I have an 94 GT that I rebuilt the transmission in now the backup lamps don't work unless I put it in reverse first then push the shifter slightly towards park. I don't know if the linkage may be off slightly the mlps slightly off or the connector for the mlps the wires were exposed this is how they looked before but they've been taped up. Does anyone have any idea why and how I can fix it? Thanks in advance!

That's a nasty looking connector. I'd think about replacing it, Rock Auto shows one on their site.

Power in is the purple/orange wire, power out to the back up lamps is the black/pink wire.

I'm planning on ordering a replacement connector just wondering if I buy it if I still have the issues what else it could be and I can check before ordering the connector

Have you checked for power out to the back up lamps?
The sensor may be slightly off, or defective.

Best to replace that connector.

Did you properly set the range selector sensor? Sounds like it is off by just a little bit.
