Thumbs up starter solenoid clicking

Hello everybody, I have a 1990 notchback and it will not start. the car shut off on me one day while I was driving I lost power to everything except headlights. first the radio shut off then the dash lights then it felt like it ran out of gas with still half a tank. at the time nothing would happen when I turned the key. I tried to push start it and nothing happened. I wasn't getting fuel or spark. when I got it home I checked all the fuses and all the grounds that I could find. after I charged the battery I was getting fuel but no spark. I changed the coil for the distributor and then when I turn the key the starter solenoid click really loud and fast. I tried push starting it again and it still wouldn't start but it sputtered which is more than before. I am not in a position to be dumping a ton of money into the car right now so I was trying to go from cheapest to most expensive problems. I do have a new distributor but I am not sure that is the problem any more. any help would be appreciated. also tried skipping the starter solenoid to see if it would crank the starter but it didn't help.

Be sure the negative post of the battery has a good solid ground to the car's chassis. This ground is normally a smaller maybe 1/4 inch diameter wire from the negative post that goes to a screw in the fender. That screw is common with an engine control ground.

Make sure that cassis wire is solidly in the terminal.

Make sure the battery posts and terminals are clean.

first battery

second wiring

third components

the clicking is almost always the battery being weak.

the draw of the starter, drops the coil out, which drops the starter out, then the coil energizes again,,,,,,and repeats itself

you need to measure battery voltage in crank
