voltage problem

When I started my car I got 14.6v, then I went and started it about 5 min later and I got 13.6v with all acc off, when it's at 14.?v the engine sounds strong but when it's at 13.6 it sounds crappy. the first time when ran all of the acc the voltage was at 13.6v, when I ran it the second time it was at 12.4v and the car was running very poor.

I have a separate fan controller from massair.com and when I turn on the fan it seems there is a drag on the engine and the rpm's go down and I get about a 1v drop, when I turn the fan off the engine rpm's go back up and the voltage goes to normal. I have an optima red to battery.

It seems like an intermittent problem whit my charging system or voltage regulator. How would I check the alternator and voltage regulator? Also my alternator gets extremely hot after running the car for about 2 min when it's cold.

I think my alternator is going out. I just went and was messing with my car and my alt is making a light grinding noise. I don't think this is normal.

It doesn't sound good.... Does your voltage go up when you rev the engine?

When I first start the car I get 14.4v when I turn on all of my acc lights, a/c,fan the voltage drops to about 13.2v, then after a min it drops to 12.1v when I rev the engine to 3k it goes up to 12.8 but when it goes to idle it's back to 12.1v. Then after I turn off all of my acc after the car has been running for about 10 min the voltage stays around 13.4 and goes up to 13.8 at 3k.

Well, it definitely sounds like something is not right. Could be a bad alternator.... could be a bad voltmeter too!

I know the voltmeter is accurate. What are the sighs of a voltage regulator going out?

The Haynes manual that I have says that if the voltage reading is less than 14-15 volts then replace the voltage regulator, if this does not fix the problem then the problem could be with the alternator... ??? not much help huh? For no more than they are, I think that I would just get a new alternator and be done with it. Sometimes you can go to an auto-electric shop and have your 135 amp alternator re-wound to 150, 175, or 200 amps. If you have a lot of accessories or a stereo system, this might be worth while.
