Exclamation Crazy foxbody electrical problems!!!

I have an 88 converted to MAF and this has me stumped on where to even begin looking. When I have the key on all my dash lghts turn on (like the headlights are on). . If the car is running the tach will go backwards/forwards and jump all over the place and the more rpms it gets the more it moves crazy. Ive pulled the dash to look for a wire grounding itself out but found nothing. I do have an MSD box but it seems to be hooked up fine unless its bad on the inside.

On another not I cant pull any codes and everyone says the computer is toast and its in a closed loop which is why it still runs. Is there any chance that one has to do with the other? The car has been driven since the mass air swap so Its not anything currently done to that but its been sitting for a probally 1.5 yrs due to a repaint and interior refresh. Any help would be great.

That does sound like a toasted computer. Do you have any friends with a mustang that will let you try your computer in their car to see if the symptoms follow the computer?

Evrything was correct. I was driving the car for a while and now its been sitting and now this. Ive checked all the grounds and it all looks good I was thinking maybe a mouse chewed a wire or something but not sure.

possible, do a visual on all the exposed wiring, check the ten pin connectors, and other plugs, these old plugs can have potential loose connections.

Ok I did some looking today and pulled off all the grounds I could find grinded down the metal, cleaned terminal and reinstalled with no difference. I checked all the dash harness and the engine bay stuff that was moved to the fenderwell but dont see anything that stands on. I noticed today that only the right side of my dash lights light up when the key is on. Also noticed that if I flash my high beams the turn signal indicators come on and all the guages peg to the left. I still got to check the salt/pepper shaker plugs but doubt theres anything there. How can I rule out certain harnesses to narrow down the problem?

I knew you could not change clusters that easily.

http://www.stangnet.com/tech/cluster87-93.pdf

I tried back in the mid 90s.

you will need to re-pin.

I ran that 92 cluster for a while with no problems other than the check engine light not working. Now the 88 cluster is acting crazy. What damage could of been done from the 92 cluster that would now cause these problems?

88 and 92 clusters are pinned differently.

without knowing the year of dash harness, who knows what went wrong.

The dash harness is an 88. Do you think its possible thats what burnt up my computer?

you should not be able to use the 92 in the 88 harness, unless it was re-pinned.

How do you account for the 92 cluster working as you say?

All the guages worked from what I remember including the tach. The only other guage I use is the fuel guage cause I have autometer for everything else.

I checked today with the wiring chart link you posted and its an 87-89 dash harness. Could of the cluster have been what burned up the computer? Im going to repin it and see if the cluster works this way.

burn up the ecm, maybe

but what you say makes no sense

92 cluster with 88 dash works?

88 cluster with 88 dash doesn't?

The 92 and 88 use to work did now neither one does anything right. Does the dash not working effect being able to pull codes since the curcuit isnt complete?

4cyl cluster will work in place of a v8 assuming they are the same years. Tach will be off due to cyl count however.

Did you install the 92 cluster yourself or was it already in this car?

Is there anyway to make the tach correct?

I installed it myself but like I stated I just plugged it in and used it. I must have a bad spot in my harness cause nothing works now. I dont have any turn signals but my 4 ways work when I hit the hazard button now also.

Well I pulled the ECU harness today and founf no problems, breaks, or burnt wires so Imgoing to just put it back in. I got a dash harness coming so Ill try that and see if it fixes my problem. Im also going to try an find a 87-89 140mph cluster so I dont have to repin the harness. Im still confused on that one cause according to the schematic its different but 50% of the people out there said they just swaped them with no problems. Anybody got any Ideas of stuff that it could be that m overlooking?
