What is this? Splice/Connector/I don't know?

I was hiding some wires in the driver's side fender on my '86 GT when a yellow wire (which runs along the front bumper to the alternator) popped out of the black thing in the picture. There are about 6-8 wires that go into this rubber/plastic thing. In the first picture you can see the hole where the wire came out (it looked to be due to corrosion/being old). Is this a splice so that I could just solder the wire back up to another wire, or could I even get rid of the black thing and solder all the wires together?

Looks like a weather-proof splice. If one of the wires broke out of the splice I would consider cutting off the wrap and inspecting the rest of the splice. Repair anything that need fixing and put piece of dual-wall adhesive-lined heatshrink tubing around the splice.
