86 Shuts Off

I have an 86 GT that needed a new ignitions switch a few months back. I swapped in my 92's ignition switch just to make sure and it ran fine. I gave the 92's switch back to the 92 and bought a new switch for the 86. Well, I finally got around to putting the switch in the 86 yesterday and it wouldn't stay running. If it did I could just barely touch the switch and the car would cut off. Again, I switched the 92's in and it did the same thing...but it worked fine in the 92. I even put the new switch in the 92 and it worked just fine.

So could it be something in the column causing the car to shut off?

Check the connector for the ignition switch and see if any of the wires have backed out of the connector shell.

Check that and also the little push lever going from the key housing to the switch itself, i have seen them crack and or wear to a point to create problems.

This is my problem. Where the red circle is if I push up on that it will run fine. As soon as I take my finger off of it, it dies. I bought a replacement...but how do you get those bolts off?!

I was under the impression you had already swapped the ignition switch between cars. You must have meant the key cylinder. Your picture shows the dreaded ignition switch separation problem. Ford had a recall (Safety Recall 95S28 - Ignition Switch Replacement) on the ignition switch that you may be able to get in on. Otherwise you'll have to get creative and grind off the heads or use vice grips to turn the bolts out. Either way the bolts will have to be replaced.

Key and Tumbler & Ignition Switch are two different parts...

The red circled one is the Ignition Switch...

Take a cut off wheel and make a slot. Insert screwdriver or possibly use Vice Grips. Turn left... Change switch, put them back in and turn right....

Or. Take Grinder, remove heads of bolts, remove switch. Use center punch and left hand drill bit and remove remaining material from threads.

Then buy what is called "Break away bolts, or shear bolts." to replace the ones as you damage them to remove the switch.

The die grinder and slotting method usually work the best! Unless you have these,Irwin 2138527 Bolt Extractor Set 3/16 to1/2 10mm 7 pc, or

Irwin Bolt-Grip Fastener Remover 5-Piece - 394001 at The Home Depot.
