What rpm do you stick shift guys have your 2 step set at?

6k typically.


80 coupe, N/A 347, tko500 1.34, 6.30 @ 109.01, 9.87 @ 137.06

Wow that’s up there! Your car must hook pretty good to launch at 6k. Last year I played around with mine at around 4500 but was getting a lot of popping and backfiring so I I shut it off and just did it manually. I’ve made some carb tuning changes since then and am going to try the 2 step again this season.

It should pop, crack and bang with on the 2 step. Here is a 5600 2 step launch from last year.

I had some pretty major backfiring that I was concerned about. My carb was running a bit rich then. I’m hoping that was why.

It can sound pretty ridiculous on the 2 step due to the air fuel charge being ignited in the exhaust. If you look close you can see fire coming out my exhaust dumps. Hope you got it figured out man!

popped banged and cracked like crazy.

90 LX Notch 5.0 5spd, bolt on drag car with some giggle gas.
11.71 @ 116mph
86 Gt T-top 5.0 5spd, That one day project.

What is the purpose of this thread? Every car is different.
7,600-8,200 depending on starting line conditions.

The last time I used the 2step was on my old set up (a worn out 306 with the carb running too rich). Since then its been changed to a 347 scat rotating assembly, AFR185s, longtubes, 780cfm DP, NX 150 shot on a Maximizer 4 progressive controller, Gforce T5, aluminum DL, 4:10s with trac loc, 275/50-15 MT street ET 50 drag radials (12psi+/-), lakewood drag struts and shocks, front sway bar removed. I ran a GForce T5 back in the mid 2000's and like that transmission. It helped me run 9.60s with my347 back in the day. I have never run drag radials with a stick, always slicks. Others can chime in with that experience. I have always been told you will get a lot of wheel hop with a radial, but not sure. Sounds like a fun car. You will just have to play with the launch RPM. My own rule of thumb has always been leave the line 500-750 rpm below shift rpm.

Radials don't recover if you start to spin like with a slick. They hook or they don't. the 2 step helped me with a consistent launch rpm so I pay attention to slipping the clutch some to not shock the tires as hard.

Clutch hit control is what you need to make radials work with a stick, especially with a street/strip nitrous application.

Radials basically need to dead hook, a clutch hit controller makes it possible to dead hook without bogging.

Adding nitrous to the mix complicates things. You will need enough clutch to hold the torque you make when you are spraying, but that much holding power will cause a big bog if you ever make a pass NA. Adding a clutch hit controller makes it possible to also dial back the initial hit, making it easy to eliminate your NA bog.

If you clutch is robust enough, you don't even need a 2-step with a clutch hit controller. Dead hook launches off the high side are usually quicker than a 2-step launch.

Thanks Grant. I agree with you that a clutch controller will help with my launches. I corresponded with you a few months ago regarding which model you recommend for this car. A clutch tamer is definitely on my “soon to buy list” and I look forward to trying it out.
