Winterizing race cars

As title states, I’m seeing what you guys do after the end of the season, if you do anything at all. I’ve seen some that do absolutely nothing, while I see some people starting the car every once in a while to keep everything lubricated. Any special attention to leaded race fuel, oil, or tires? I’d assume you’d want to fully inflate tires and rotate every so often to keep from getting flat spots. Throw on a battery tender as well, maybe an oil change at the end of the season?

Ideally I put the car up on jack stands for two reasons. First is so the tires do not support the weight of the car all winter and secondly, so I don't have to bend over so far working on it. Lol. I usually will take all of the rocker arms off so that none of the valve springs are compressed for extended periods of time, this serves a second purpose. It makes me perform the annual valve adjustment come spring. Since the garage is heated, I do not worry about the water in the cooling system freezing. I change the oil come spring time. I may or may not drain the fuel system.

we normally have the car torn down so we dont really do ####... that and the shop is heated

Put the car on jack stands better yet get pro jacks. Get the engine refurbished if it needs it. If the car has water in it drain it put anti freeze or winter stabilizer in it. So it does not rust. If u run M1 I would drain that. Battery tender.

Remove engine, send it to a builder for freshen up.
remove transmission, send it back to builder for freshen. Clutch included (if you are a stick shifter), converter is a must.
Send car to storage facility, remove tires, store them in the dark (UV will attack rubber), pay someone else to store it over the winter.


Of course I don't do any of that but it seems like that's the way people suggest doing things....guess I'm just a podunk redneck bracket racer.

Or......

Move South, race all year.

Good idea on the jack stands! The garage is heated, I just didn’t know if it could be a set and forget kind of deal. I do think it’s time to change fuel filters and may do some work, but all in all, what are thoughts on the fuel?

E-85 sits in the fuel tank all year. No issues.

you should be fine leaving it in the tank. but if you don't feel comfortable doing it, drain it and put pump gas in it

Should I run any additives with leaded gas? I’ve never put pump gas in it since it was built, it’s just tuned that way. Is it really more stable than leaded fuel?

some claim it is... we leave Q16 in the tank over the winter. hell we spoken with a few guys who leave M1 in tanks for a month

Heard u can leave M1 for about a month. Switching to M1 and racing at Cecil first of the month. Also a few other races. We will see. Had Q16 no problems.

Drained the water tank for intercooler and engine. Added anti freeze. Torn down the engine noticed I had a head gasket leak that rusted the cylinder. Augh.

I always just put stabilizer in the fuel tank and put coolant in and then drain the spring.

Just Stabil. Nothing special and you can find it anywhere. Been using it for years in race car, mowers, etc.
