60 foot advice

Looking for advice on improving my 60 foot. I don't have any out of car video but I have some horrible in car video. I would think and like to go low 1.6's which I think is realistic. Thoughts?

Car weighs 3320 with me.
T5 with a 2.94 1st gear
4.30's in the rear
Hoosier QTP 27 x 11.5 x 15
Moroso front drag springs with Comp Eng shocks set at 90/10
Rear is Calvert split mono leafs with Caltracs and Calvert single adjustable shocks
Combo in sig.

I have tried launching from 5000 to 6300, Caltracs in lower and upper hole, rear shock setting from 1 to 6. Tire pressure from 12-15. And I can never seem to make forward progress. I have hit 1.68 twice but its usually in the 1.74-1.79 consistently. I do think my tire pressure gauge is reading high.

Based on looking at this video, it bogs hard on the 5k launch, I'm thinking I needed more tire pressure, higher rpm launch, and stiffen the rear shocks some more. I had them at 6. 9 is the stiffest. Am I on the right track?



Someone took some video of a test and tune with a bunch of runs as well from the stands I found. Here's a couple but track is not prepped the same and I could actually spin the tires on the launch.

What clutch do you have? It sounds like it's pretty aggressive from the motor bogging and the tires spinning.


351W, 26x10.5 MT ET Streets, Team Z goodies, AEM, NA for now

Its a ford clutch. I used to call it the Motorsport cobra clutch. Not sure what its called now. It has a 26 spline Centerforce disc in it.

The bog is killing it. Clutch is holding the power just fine, but IMO, it's also causing a nasty bog. Have you looked into a clutch tamer? Neat car, BTW. Don't see many of those around anymore.

From my uneducated opinion, with a car running similar ET and MPH even on the runs where it spun the tires, the car is still "bogging" once they do hook. Low 1.6s might be tough to get with a mid 12 second combo however. Every car I have been involved with (mid 12s) seems to benefit from high launch RPM and getting the tires to spin verse dead hook. Personally I would try out 12 psi and a high launch RPM and then possibly even lower the tire pressure down if it spins too much.

I was thinking lower tire pressure would increase the bog? I'll be up for one more test and tune in a couple weeks. Going to try and figure this out.

Do I have too much tire? Would I be better off with a 26x10 instead of the current 27 x 11.50?

My thoughts on lower pressure and higher RPM is to try and get some tire spin but on the edge of hooking. Instead of spin and bog or spin and never hook 1st. If you have a paid of 26x10s to try and it can't hurt.

also, do you have a video of the burnout? or can you tell us where in that 47 minute of video is the burnout

I run my QTPs (92 Mustang hatch) with 18lbs cold and they hook great.. 27x10.5-15.. tried from 12 up to 24.. but 18 cold seems the best TP for the set up..331cu, aod, 373 rear..

ITs the bog thats killing the 60'. I have the same issue. you need to slip the clutch a tad or dial in the perfect amount of tire spin .... which is difficult....

The old school way to launch a stick car was to use a deep 1st gear and hit the tires hard enough to get some controlled tire spin. The only purpose of that controlled spin was to keep rpm up higher where the engine made more power. The obvious downside was that it made the car more likely to break parts. Might not be the best solution if you want to keep that T5 alive.

Adding a clutch slip device like the ClutchTamer fixes that old problem. The car won't need an extra low 1st gear or controlled spin to keep the rpm up where the engine makes power. And without the instant torque multiplication from a torque converter to deal with, the hit actually ends up softer than that of an automatic but lasts longer. Add to that the fact that a slip controlled clutch can get that softer launch at a much higher rpm. Launch rpm is basically stored energy, and the engine has to make the energy that it takes to spin up that rotating assy. A slip controlled manual allows spinning it up much higher prior to the start, which makes more power available to accelerate the car when the clocks are running.
