Spinning off of the line - need advice, QUICK MUSTANG

I brought my Stang to the track for the first time this past weekend and I was able to run it three times. In short, here were the results:

Run 1: 11.3 @ 130MPH with a 2.2 60' time 4000rpm launch on transbrake
Run 2: 11.0 @ 131MPH with a 2.0 60' time 4000rpm launch on transbrake
Run 3: 10.6 @ 132MPH with a 1.8 60' time 4600rpm launch on transbrake

The MPH brings the car down to a very low 10 second, or even high 9 second ET, but my problem is the launch. I know it takes a lot of practice to control a race car, but it also takes research, and asking for advice and assistance, so here i am. :-)

I have 14lbs of tire pressure. The tires are Hoosier 28x10 slicks. The wheel spins about 1" off (or around) the tire, so I know i need to drill the wheels and get tubes, thats a given.

I do not have video of the car and I was very nervous, so to ask me what I felt would be useless right now.

I am looking for practical advice that I can use at a test-n-tune night at Island Dragway here in beautiful northern NJ.

Air pressure looks WAY high. MT's like 10.5 psi so I would start around this unless someone else with Hoosiers suggests otherwise..

I am running UPR k-member kit with lakewood 90/10 struts and a 150# spring. I also have UPR upper adjustables, BBK lowers and an anti-roll bar with lakewood 50/50 shocks with stock springs in the rear.

The car weighs 2900 pounds with me.

See not to dissagree with Kevin but I like running 16-17 psi and this keeps the tire from spinning on the wheel. I will never drill another set of wheels. It ruins them.

I have the car set up so that it dead hooks with this pressure on a 9" tire.

You need to get some video to determine what it is doing. Just spinning or hooking and unloading.

You have a 9 second car there.

A capable 9 second car without any subframe connectors? Or did you forget to mention those?

did you have the pedal to the floor with the transbrake? didn't sound like it from the stands...............

i run anywhere form 9.5-10.5 in my 28x10.5 mt and they never spin on the wheels. my car has been a 1.48 60' on motor and a 1.26 60' on the hose.

you need to get some more weight transfer most likely. if the nose in way low try raising it some.

i had 130lb springs in mine and it sat way low even with the coilovers cranked up. so i switched to 175lbs and it works great!!!

i owe the rear suspension set up to kevin @ baseline suspensions. i did what he wanted and it works flawlessly.

i f-ed something up on the last run of the day, i don't know if i hurt the tranny or it's "just me". the first run, I was on the 2-step at 4600rpm with the pedal to the floor.

Whats the pinion angle at? How much weight is removed from the front of the car?

My 28x10.5 ET Drags on an 8" rim like to be at 10.5-11.5 psi when cold. When I come back after the pass, they are around 13 psi or so. I do have rim screws though. Car hooks in the 1.46-1.50 range currently, but should do better with better weather.

Don't drill the rims! Glue the tire to the rim, it works much better.

And I allways ran my slicks at 11.5-12psi.

Looks like the harder you launched it, the faster it ran. If its initially spinning, it might be the track or the burnout/lack their of. No matter your suspension, you have to have some initial bite to make it work. Whenever I am setting up my car, or making the first pass after some mods/adjustments, If I have problems hooking, I'll watch some of the other guys run. If they are all spinning off the line, I know its not just me/my car/my settings.

don't waist any time with pinion angle set it at -1 with solid mounts and -3 with poly. As long as it is not shaking the tires changes will not help it.

The more pressure you can run in the tires and still get it to hook the faster the car will be. Mine will leave 1.41 with 16-17 all day long

At 16-17 the tire will not spin on the wheel

Glue??? What kind of glue do you use? Does it eat the rubber up? Very interesting, I have never heard this before. At this point, would I just deflate, bead the glue around both sides and inflate?

Correct, the hard I launched, the faster I ran and the quicker 60' times I had. I might not be heating up the slicks enough. The track conditioning was great, people where pulling huge wheel stands. I never made it to Island this past weekend, my wife got sick and I stepped up to the plate with my daughter, which is MUCH more important than a silly car.

This was helpful and your insight is appreciated.

I use the word "glue" loosly. I personaly allways used Permatex contact cement on my slicks. I just put a very thin bead all the way around both beads of the tire. I never used a tube, and this did two things. It kept the tire in place, and it made sure it held air. Some shops have specific bead glue, but I don't know what its called.

Ohh, and the contact cement makes it a bitch to break the bead. Some people use RTV, it comes off easier, but doesnt hold as well.

looks like you are past this point already, but I run my 29x10 Hoosier slicks at 10.5, and have 1.53d to a [email protected] if that helps. I have tubes and very little movement up top

Ok, just wondering. Converter looks good. i went through a similar problem with high trap mph and slow times. Loosened up the converter and cut 4 tenths off. That is why I asked.

I would suggest fixing the tire/rim slip issue you have. Try 10-10.5 psi and make sure you heat them sufficiently. Usually once they start smoking give it another one to two seconds and you should be good. Hoosiers dont need to much heat to hook well since they are soft.
Your car should be leaving way harder. Are you getting weight transfer? Hope this helps.

I don't know about the weight transfer. I have 90/10 lakewoods up front and 50/50 shocks in the back. I have 4-cyl rear springs and 150# coil over springs up front.

I need to fix the slipping issue, I know that for sure. I need to poll though, glue or screws?

You have the right suspension parts in my opinion. I use the same parts with the exception of eibach front drag springs (with a coil cut off). Maybe someone else can comment on your coilover spring rate. Maybe you need something a bit stiffer to help your weight transfer.
As far as the rims, I say you built a race car so just screw the rims and be done with it. Much quicker. I have never heard of an approved method of glueing a tire from M/T or Hoosier.
Not to sound like a marketing campaign but I use the above stated suspension and the baseline kit and cut 1.470's. If the simple things do not work maybe you might consider adjusting your instant center to make this thing hook. Sounda like you have a killer car if you can get it out of the hole!

Your 60 ft times are ridiculous for the ET you are turning My son runs 2.0 60 ft on street tires at 14.00 . Are you sure your not hitting the tires to hard causing you to go up in smoke?Try with out the brake to see if that is your problem. If your not blowing the tires off it , You need to work on the engine to get the power to come on quicker.The 60 foot looks like it is spinning ,weight transfer is needed.

Typically people use glue with drag radials, though some use it with slicks. Here is the hot setup for drag radials anyways:
