Talking Spool??

Whos driving on the street with a spool? Is it really a pain in the butt or not so bad? How hard is it on parts/ tires?

I would imagine that it would be really hard on the tires and most likely if you ever get caught in the rain would be very dangerous, ie one tire always breaking loose in a turn.

I just added a 33 spline built strange rear with spool to my ride. Given this is just a weekend toy/drag car that sees street time, but its not any worse than manual steering. I do like knowing that when I drive the car to/from the track its not the rear that will be breaking.

Cant say anything about its affect on tire wear, too new to me.

306, C4, AFR185s, B31, Vic Jr, Holley HP750, N2O fogger, 4.10s in a BUILT 8.8.

It pushes the car pretty hard if your turning. Slowing your turning speed down will be nessicary.

I have one in my daily driver. In parking lots and driveways it is a pain in the ass. Going straight it is fine.

i always drive with a spool, the gt i have now is getting one very shortly. just be careful in the rain

yea i was wongering about the rain i have the mickey's and manuel steering so i normally driver pretty slow in the rain and corners are taken slow also i just wanted so see how many otheres there were

I will add that if you have 16" or 17" rims/tires that you use on the street, it will make things A LOT worse. I had a spool in my car for a short time and it really took a lot of the fun out of driving my car on the street. I have 17s with Nitto DRs and besides trying to push the front end when going around corners, if I was going around tight corners, the rear end would chatter the inside tire since there was no sidewall to soak up the twisting. I switched to the Strange/Eaton limited slip, and it's been great.

well i have 275/60/15's on draglites so the 17 inch wheels should not be a problem. has anyone been caught out in the rain with one and how much worse is it with a spool over the mickey t tires? I haven't heard of the Strange/Eaton limited slip so i will be looking into that also thanks

Just takes some getting used to. Like others have said, be careful when its wet. Overall, its not much difference than if you have a TIGHT differential in it.

the biggest spline diff i have found so far is a 31 i already have one of those i was looking for a 33 or 35 spline diff and all i have come up with are spools

Here's the one that I bought. It's advertised as a Strange differential, but when I got it, it has Eaton stamped right on it. I was in the same boat as you, with the 33 spline axles, and was able to find a few different ones, but settled on this one. It's a good unit and I'm happy with it so far.

Yeah, I wasn't real happy about paying it either, but my real mistake was that I didn't buy to begin with. I ended up wasting the money on a spool and then buying the diff too. Autofab was by far the cheapest place I found. When I called up Josh, I let him know that I got the info from this site and he hooked me up with everything and I had no problems at all. It was well over $100 savings getting it from them.

In summit the diff they have in the book was only a 31 but come to think of it they don't even have any 33 spline axles in there either... I will check one of those out also thanks

They don't make a Detoit Locker in 33 spline for an 8.8 rear end. They only make it in 33 spline for the 9". I actually asked the guys from Detroit Locker at last year's PRI show and they confirmed it.

The summit book doesn't show a lot of the stuff they actually carry. The link I put up was for the 33 spline diff though if you were talking about that one too.
