Mild Decent Cam Upgrade??

I've got a 95 stock 351 Lightning shortblock
in a 4,000 lb 89 Lincoln Mark 7 with 1.94 valve
170cc small port Edelbrock Perf heads and a Cobra
over GT40-351 lower. Beefed AOD with 2500 stall,
3:55 gears.

Looking for a moderate cam upgrade - just
have a stock 5.0 HO roller in there now with
1.72 rockers.

Do lots of long road trips, don't want to totally
destroy my mileage - now getting up to 22 at
80 mph - but really would like a little boost
in power.

Of course, on a budget.

Couple "budget" possibilities -

Ford E cam (would be .535 lift with my 1.72 rockers)
widely available at reasonable $

Trick Flow Stage 1 cam (would probly have to change
to 1.6 rockers) Can buy good lo miles used

Crane 2031 only 214 intake @ 050 - probly not
much of an upgrade, ~.515-530 lift w/1.72's
(made for 1.7 rockers so wouldn't have to change rockers
to avoid excessive lift) Can buy new "leftover" from
a project

Appreciate any comments from anyone who has tried
any of those in a similar application, or appreciate any
suggestions for other good selections - from experience ,
also REALLY can't afford the time OR the $ to
do anything to fix piston to valve interference.

Not looking to go much over 5k rpm, looking for
decent low rpm throttle response and good mid range.

Thanks for any info / suggestions!

I have a Crane 2030 and LOVE it. I run it with Cobra 1.7's and get .566/.578 lift. 216/220 dur @ .050, 270/278 adv on 112 lobe centers. Works fine with computer, clears pistons with room to spare, and has a nice noticeable idle. Midrange improvement is fantastic.

Have yet to do good with it at track, due to MY poor driving. On the street, it melts 2nd gear and lays rubber in third. Enough for me.

Hmmm, sounds like just about what I'm looking for -
esp. in the 050 duration & lobe centers.

And your ported GT40 irons are probly at least as good
as my 1.9 intake 170 cc intake port Ebrocks.

Just to verify - is this in a 351 Lightning? What, if anything,
did all that lift do to your gas mileage?

And it cleared your pistons, hey? Stock 351 L shortblock?

THAT would be nice! Don't have the time OR $ to get into
the shortblock right now.

Thanks for the info!!!!

No, this wasn't a lightning, sorry. I know this is a Lightning area but was just looking around and saw your post. I have a 5.0. Remarkably, my mileage was not affected by more than a 1/2 mpg.

My valves are smaller than yours, 1.84, 1.46, but cleared by .100 and .250 respectively. No matter what you really will NOT know p/v clearance unless you get the cam, install, and then check.

And macx you need to be sure your valve springs are up to managing that lift -- both from a coil bind and a spring pressure perspective.

Yes, I've been trying to find out what those
stock Ebrock Perf springs are good for in lift
and bind, so far no luck.

That's the same shortblock I'm running.

I happened to find a new TF Stage 1 that
a guy bought then decided not to use that
I was able to get at a quite reasonable price.

With my 1.72's it will come out at .536 / .548
so might work, even though it's a little longer
at 050 (without looking it up, I think it's about
221 / 225 or so). Of course, will check pv
clearance.

Thanks.

Update!

Had a growing clatter in the motor, so when I was home for
a week from my away=from-home job, I took the motor out
(HATE that job in the driveway with no hoist!) and first checked
the roller rockers (OK) and the lifters (OK -none collapsed), so
next took the motor out and then took the crank in to have it
checked., All round and OK, so off came th heads and out came
the rods. Six of em in a 45k motor needed re-rounding!

Took the opp to put in a wee bit bigger cam. TF Stage 1,
with my 1.72 rockers (cam was designed for 1.6's) it still came
out to about .430+ and .440+ lift. Checked PV clearance and
all's well - .130min on exhaust and over .150 on intake.
So - good to go! Don't think it will overmatch my small
port 1.9 intake Ebrocks and GT40 intake.

ANYWAY - got the BIG battle over today, finally.
The motor is now down on the mounts and hooked to
the trans. HATE that job alone! Of course, not before
the LAST bolt in the Ebrock heads for the intake pulled
the helicoil out. 2 more hours to get a new helicoil and an
insert tool. At least it worked, and held torque.

Now it's getting exciting - hooking up stuff and I can just
about HEAR that cam making some more horsepressure!

One more short day and I'll be taking video clips of
burnouts :-)))))))))

Who said old men can't have fun!? VROOM VROOM
