How fast is your bolt on Gen 1L

I am looking for a new toy and am drawn to the Gen 1 L's. What I have found for a base line for these trucks is 15.6 @ 86mph. I would like to buy one within a year from now and just want some owners opinions and input as far as what they have done to their own trucks and what not. Also what do these trucks respond to the best as far as best bank for the buck. I want to find one that is basically stock untouched and I will only be adding a few bolt ons just things that don't change the factory appearance but make it run harder.

Thanks

14.1 is very respectable for those mods heck that is stock 99 territory.

Mike is that full exhaust from the headers back or just mid pipe/catback? Those GT-40 351's must have been underrated

These trucks were rated at 245 FWHP but that cannot be right because it would take that much RWHP to run the times that they do stock.

14.10 on the speed limiter. 95 ported heads, cam, long tubes under drives, and a drag radial 17 inch tire, thats why it was hitting the speed limiter.

yeah was just a 2-1/2" pipes and flowmasters dumped at the axle. has stock headers. stock gen 1s dyno something like 230 rwhp so i think they were somewhat under rated

My best run time wise was 14.85 and my best mph was 91.68. All I had done when I ran 91.68 was an unbolted muffler(stock exhaust), a k&n, and underdrive pullies. That run was a 14.94 though, when I ran 14.85 I lost a half a mph but that was with the muffler bolted up and no cats. Oh yeah I have a JET chip and 14 degrees of timing. It runs good for a 4500 pound truck. Put it this way, the hemis are rated at 345 hp and the only time I have ever been beaten by one was when he had nitrous, even still he only beat me by .2.

LOL, thanks. I am getting ready to put some polished rims on it soon, so hopefully it'll look even better. And I really need to get my top repainted.

LOL, I like how the black ones look the best but I am not going to be picky about color. Although I have yet to have seen a white one around my town. Just a few red ones and a few black ones, I may want to find a white one just becuase they are the rarest

mine went 14.89 on a 2.16 60ft. @ 91.44 with pulleys, K&N & 14* timing.

Added off-road-H & chamber Flows dumped at the rear end & it went 14.75 no a 2.10 60ft @ 91.27

Added 5.0 cam & roller conversion, 1.7RRs & electric fan & slowed to 14.77 on a 2.11 60ft @ 90.47 the valves were floating at higher RPMs.

I just added level 10 street strip shift kit, & I'm going to replace valve spring & I'll post an update. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a 14.4.

Good info light-stang and 93REDBOLT,

93REDBOLT, what tires do you use? is a 2.10-2.16 60' on street radials? Do you spin at all? I never drove one but I'd think with some sticky tires you could get some lower 60's....Maybe not??

I cut 2.0's on street tires with no spin. My ET's were a hair better with the 2.0's than they were when I was getting 2.1's but my mph suffered. The track was really sticky when i got the 2.0's and my mph was around 89.5-90.5 that day. My previous best was 14.94 at 91.68 with a 2.1 sixty. So somewhere between the heat and the sticky track I lost 1 full mph.

Yep, thats street tired 275/60/17 GT IIs. I spin a little, mabe 4ft give or take, I want to get some drag radials, I think I would hit 1.9s because when it quits spinning & bites it accelerates good. ( for a truck ).

Thanks, which mustang is yours? If you have seen me I have probably seen you. BTW, if you are looking there is a black '93 for sale at a car lot on canal, I think it is in news on wheels also. I think the guy is asking like 6800 but will take 6000 or less probably.

I have a 1993 Lightning which I have owned since new.
This is still my daily driver and I have no power adder and passes strict emission. I started working to improve the trucks performance once I finished the body mods.
I have ran a best of 13.7, I have a video of a 13.84 run at Etown from back in 2002.
I still have the truck and hope to improve once I add a converter this fall.

here is the video site;

Nice truck Run351, are you spinning off of the line, or bogging at all? Just wondering because of your 2.02 60' time. 18.84 is awesome for a 4500# truck especially with a 2.02 60'. Did the E-cam hurt you at all down low? Sorry for all of the questions I am just learning all I can about these trucks before I get one so I’ll know right where to start, lol

Thanks

I am not spinning off the line and most of my power is mid to upper range which is shown with my higher MPH. I have the stock converter and a vavlebody only in the trans and the 2.02 is average I have been getting for 60' times.
The E303 Cam has a nice idle and is very streetable, * I do however have mass air. I think this is too lopey for Speed Density. I run alot of timing which helps my 60' time.

I hope to redo the trans and change the converter to a 2800 stall. I should drop my 60' times into the 1.8 range, that should get me in the low to mid 13s for 1/4 mile end time.
I will see, I still have alot to do but the truck is running well and with over 130,000 on the original SB I am happy with my set up.

I have been driving it to the track since 1996, though I hope to trailor it once I get my next truck.

good luck.

Hopefully I'll be faster this weekend, I'm almost done swaping out the stock GT-40s for a set of ported edelbrock performers with 2.02 valves.

Last night I went to ETOWN (raceway park in NJ) and my buddy ran his 1994 Lightning, he does not have a power adder either and is running consistent 13.4s @ about 99
This shows you the potential of these trucks.
Let us know how the heads work out for you, remember most of it is TUNING>

Yea, I seen that you guys went on nloc I on there to same name. I hope to have good results. It'll be hare to tune because I have no ajustable FPR. I'm going to switch to mass air this winter, and buy a twEECer because I'm going to build a single turbo kit. I'd like to start now but I'm still in the parts gathering stage & don't want to tear my truck apart while the track is still open.

Track Times

I have a Black 93. Best and only run thus far with the new combo was a 8.4 @ 86 mph in the 1/8th. I was actually impressed with the time considering i was on wore out factory tires, and stock fuel pump. 60' was 2.1X. I couldnt really get into it until 2nd gear because of the Lightnings notorious wheelhop. Mods include: mass air conv, steeda cam w 1.7 rr's, Vortech s-trim, headers, bassani X pipe, 70 mm tb. That pass cost me a head gasket because of my lean condition. The motor is coming out this week sometime and getting freshened up plus adding GT40 X heads, bigger cam, T-trim, and more fuel. Should be in the low 8's or high 7's on drag radials next time.
