How Big of a Cam Will Fit?

Excuse me for trespassing but I think you guys may be my only hope for a good answer for piston to valve clearance on a 351. I own a 1995 Cobra R and I would like to put a custom cam in it but there is little info available on the 95R piston. In the past I have heard that the 95R motor was built using a Lightning shortblock, while others say it was its own rotating assembly using a marine block, etc. A fellow 95R owner recently posted a pic of his piston tops taken while doing a head swap. The pistons in the pic look just like the ones in a 95 Lightning crate shortblock I’ve seen. Can you guys confirm that the piston in the pic appear to be the same as the ones in the Lightnings? Also, how big of a cam have you guys been able to get away with on a stock shortblock? Don’t forget to tell me what rockers were used (1.6, 1.7, etc). Does anyone know a part number for the stock Lightning pistons? I was told by L&B (the official Cobra R engine builder for the IMSA Series) that the stock 95R pistons were 6219’s, I haven’t been able to do anything with that number…

FWIW, my 95 5.0 Cobra Mustang has a custom cam in it with 565/555 lift on 1.6’s with a stock shortblock. I’m sure my cam designer will be looking for at least those type numbers if it will fit…

Thanks for any help,

Kyle

I ran a E303 cam with 1.7 rockers with no problem. I would have to say that somewhere around .550 lift is the max.
