Question Cam and heads

I have been out of hot rods for a few years now and being stationed in England makes it tough to get what I want for a gen 1 Lightning. My questions are with mass air and what cam and head combination are good for the Lightning. I've owned a few Mustangs but they all had mass air so that wasn't an issue with my upgrades. 1st of all, I'm told the Lightning is much more touchy to upgrades with speed density. I want to know if anyone has upgraded to a roller cam and heads without mass air and have had no driveablity problems. Since the last mass air conversion kit I saw listed for almost a grand, I'd like to avoid it if possible. Now to the cam and heads. Does anyone know if it is possible to use the X303 cam with AFR 165 heads and 1.7 rockers on the stock bottom end without notching pistons? If its not possible, what cam can I use with the 1.7 rockers and will I still get good power from say the E303? Also, I'd like to know about the power that both put out on the 351. I had the B303 in a 5.0 and thought it sucked. The reason for all the questions is like I said, its hard as hell finding out what you need here in the land of the mini's and 1.2L's. I can't just check this stuff myslef in one afternoon. Thanks guys for any help in getting my truck into English road butt kicking condition.

stickman, there has been alot of dicussion on
this at have the pro-m kit and like
it but, had alot of tuning issues with it..the
general concensous is to stay SD. call cam motion
at 225-926-6110 and they will cut a cam for your
combo. seems most guys are going with SD cams
and a EEC tuner or chip. Heads, personally i have
TFS but, AFR's seem to be popular right now..I think i would have gone with 185's, exhaust, cam
motion cam, 1.7's and pulleys for a nice combo.
then again keep it stock and run a supercharger.

Custom Cam

Thanks rocket, I'll give them a call. You think the 185s would be a better choice huh? I was just figuring on keeping the intake valve smaller to make the piston clearance a little better. Hell, I may throw an S trim on it later anyway. Who knows.

Many guys have put the 185's on the Lightnings with no problems. The L's have such a deep dished piston its not really an issue. I agree with rocket398 about the combo.

Thanks as well for your help. I will be going with the 185's now after talking to a few other people about them and they all agree to go bigger. The question I have now is, do you know if you can get the 185's for the bolt down rockers like the Cobra 1.7's I have now? I'd hate to spend more money on new rockers after just picking these up. The new heads, cam and other minor things should help pep up my L with the current off-road X-pipe, headers and Flowmasters.

you mite want to check this out. This is the combo I ran with my S-trim. If you ever put one on your Lightning.

11's would be just fine 4 me

Thanks for the tech sheet on your truck. Have you had any issues with the Mass-Air? Also, are your heads ported? Is the use of the E-cam due to emission laws in your area or did you figure that would be best for driveability? At the moment I am still thinking of sticking with SD but Dave Pickrel has kind of got me thinking about the Pro-M Kit.
