Hard Shifting

93 Lightning. Anyone had problems with thier Lightning shifting really hard at part throttle? If I disconnect the battery for a while then it shifts normal for about 25 miles, but then its back to neck breaking shifts. I already changed the V.S.S. sensor and nothing. The truck seems to run worse when it's shifting hard. Any ideas?93 Lightning

Mine started doing the same thing last night...but my truck runs like ass all the time. I reset the batter and they fixed it for now...I am goina flush the tranny and see if that helps. I guess there is a solenoid that causes the problem, it sticks or something, easy fix i guess. Do a search on NLOC...

Just got off the phone with my local Ford dealership, and they told me that it was either the VSS sensor in the rear or a T/R sensor located on the side of the transmission. They told me it was going into limp mode and boosting the line pressure. They didn't know exactly how that would effect the engine performance. Maybe that's why it ran so bad last time at the track! Let me know if and how you fix yours.

Mine is doing the same thing...shifting hard and running like CRAP at the track. Did they give you prices for the T/R (if the speedo works, it would only make sense that the VSS is working)

The only thing I wonder, is if it would throw codes, because my truck doesnt throw codes.

Installed the T/R sensor yesterday morning and the hard shifting has not returned, YET! The sensor was about $65 from the dealership and took about 15 min to install. I could only get a code with the engine running, but not with the key on, engine off test.

I can find the part # for ya, but hell yea the truck seems way faster. It might be all in my head though. I'm planning on going back to the track on friday to find out. I'll let ya know along with the part #. It's been 45 miles and still not one hard shift. I need a level 10 2800rpm stall now.

Worth a shot.

Mine shifts hard when I'm on the gas but other than that it shifts pretty easy.

My brother's 93 is starting to hard shift at half throttle too, might have to give it a try on his.

I ran a KOER test, and it threw all kinds of codes, none for the tranny...

I got a ACT ECT and TPS code..

You might be getting the TPS voltage too high code if you have upped the voltage to .98 or so. The ECT code may be caused if you tested the motor when it was not at operating temp. I am taking the truck to the track tonight to see how it does. So far after replacing the VSS and the T/R sensor no problems with hard shifts(115 miles).

Diabolic,
stupid question...wtf is a t/r sensor?

If I replace this sensor and it makes my trans shift smooth all the time, I will drive to your house and bring you a mc'd's extra value meal of your choice!!!

Mine only seems to do it when im towing and then it keeps doing it for like a week after. Well, over the summer i go to the track every weekend so it usually starts shifting smooth for like one day before I tow again. And seems to get real bad gas milage and has no throttle response when its shifting hard.

Thanks!

I'm not really sure what it stands for but I was told that it tells the transmission when and what gear to shift to. It also controlls the line pressure for the shift firmness(so I was told). I replaced mine, but to no avail cuz it started doing it again. I know it will sound strange and I have no explination for it, but it always started shifting hard when i would come to a particular 4-way in front of an electric power station. I tested this by disconnecting the computer and getting it to shift normal and sten pulling up to the 4-way. Sure enough as soon as I pulled away came the hard 1-2 followed by the 3 shift. I have since been avoiding the intersection and have put over 300 miles without a problem.
