lighting water pump rotation?

Hey I have a 95 lighting motor and am putting it into a mustang. I need to know if they are standard or reverse rotation, cause I want to use my stock mustang fan.
thanks,
Ken

I have a lightning (converted to carb) motor in my stang and its going the opposite direction all my other stangs with 302s and 351s have?? I bought it like this so dont know if its been changed??
current with lightning motor...the top just makes a triagle loop...the others have a idler pulley to change direction ( the belt crosses over the crank pulley then over the water pump)

my 302

my 410 ...hard to really tell..but they go the other way from the current lightning motor???

O.P.

originally the water pump rotates in the opposite direction of the crank.

but who knows what has been changed.

you did not post a picture of YOUR setup as recieved from previous builder.

the original setup will use the "grooves" on the crank pulley, and the "flatside" of belt / pulley on the pump, thus, makes it rotate in reverse....

lots of people unknowingly put the pulleys on wrong, or use the incorrect pulleys,
or buy the incorrect water pump.

I really dont want to have to tear this pump off to see what direction it spins. Im gonna run it as is in reverse rotation and see if I have any problems. Ive been building this project since 2001, hell I might have even changed the water pump when I starting building the motor, thinking I was going to run it standard. lol Im using the stock mustang fan, so its gonna have to run reverse rotation.

THEN,

why did you ask...???

factory pulleys when unaltered,
use a different bolt circle pattern diameter for a reverse compared to a common-standard rotation pump..
so, unless the pulleys have been redrilled or altered, or are aftermarket with both bolt patterns,
a reverse rotation will use the "flatside" of the belt..

I asked cause if the answer would have been they run a standard rotation, then I would have had to tear it apart to verify it. But it was posted they use a reverse, so unless I changed it, the odds are in favor of it being a reverse rotation. Also if what you say is true about the bolt circle diameter being different, then I have reverse rotation pump, cause I bolted on my mustang pulleys. I will go out on a limb here and say your wrong on that part, only because some of us have been having a discussion on belt routing on a local forum, and guys are just swapping the pump to a standard rotation and their pulleys are still bolting up.

Dump the stock fan and get a flex fan or some electrics...

Pretty hard to beat the amount of air a stock fan pulls. Most I have seen go electric fan, only to go back to stock. I am pulling air thru a trans cooler and a 3.5" thick intercooler, and a radiator. If the stock fan isnt enough, then Ill add a pusher electric on the front. I had my turbo kit designed to clear the stock fan, so Im all set.

Id guess the lighting has a LOT more grill opening, versus my 89 lx. What are your inlet temps on your set up? If I went with an electric fan, it has to go in the front(down pipe might melt it). Can the mark 8 be set up to push?
