Don't try to buy MAC right now if the place your getting it from does'nt have it on hand in stock ready to ship...verify.
I'm almost 3 months on 1.75"/3" ceramic long tubes. Just got word something is going on and nothing is shipping. Sounds like major issues. The kind that might be the end. Don't know. Hearsay at this point, but don't special order ANYTHING.
If you find a set and they have an extra let me know I was looking at ordering some down the road. 1.75/3in auto ceramic Long tubes. and planned on ordering 3in pro chamber H pipe.
Mac’s customer service is total #### to say the least. I had the same issue with mine, and I try and warn others. Your best bet is to see if lmr or American muscle have them in stock and order from there.
Just an idea after doing some reading looks like this will work. Don't hold me to it but let me know if you think I'm right. The only thing you would need to do is block off the EGR bung.
So I ended up deciding to take the discounted pricing offer for the Doug's headers from my Vendor. Talking with my brother he was like I can make the Prochamber work with those, no problem. So rather than keep waiting indefinitely, I just switched.
I tried to buy the MAC headers from Team Beefcake Racing in Ohio. They have been a pleasure to work with. Something I can't say about MAC. After the most recent news about MAC they came back to me with the offer for the Doug's headers without me asking what options I had. After waiting 3 months I really believe they wanted to do what they could to help me out. So I definitely have no issue with them at all. Thought about it for a couple days and decided to just get on with it. Cost me a few more bucks, but my headers are shipping today.
The Doug's headers are 16ga ceramic coated 1 3/4" primary long tubes to 3" collectors. They have the traditional triangle flange. My brother is going to cut off the ball flange of the Prochamber and weld on a pair of matching triangle flanges. Whatever tubing is needed to bridge any gap will be added.
Are you auto or standard?
What transmission?
How did they end up fitting?
Maybe a pic of how close it is to the steering shaft?
Any other info I need to know before I buy Doug's headers?
I don't have them yet, but according to Doug's they are supposed to fit both auto and stick cars (I'm stick, T5 currently with a TKO600 on deck) and they are specifically for 8.2 block 79-93 Mustangs. We will see how they fit and how much trouble it'll be to mate them to the Pro-Chamber I already have.
About 15 years ago I had major problems with Mac. I ordered long tube headers for my 408 stroker that had a c4. The header collector wouldn't line up with the mid pipe on the passenger side.
The customer service lady said the shop was installing it wrong! He is nhra certified on installing roll cages and other chassis stuff. We provided pictures and everything. I'm sure I still have them.
They wouldn't do anything to make it right. Since then I don't recommend them to anyone. I never hope companies fail, but...
The picture of the Doug's headers above looks exactly like Hooker's 6227 headers. I had the Hooker 6227-1HKR headers on my 363 with an AOD and Mac 3" Prochamber. I liked that combo a lot.
I added the link above so you can see the Hooker headers. I had them and they looked exactly like that including the location of the four slip-fit joints.
I had an issue with MAC last year. I ordered the 3" Prochamber for shorties and it took weeks and weeks and weeks. Both the vendor and MAC were pointing at each other and I was getting pissed. I finally dropped the hammer on them and gave them an ultimatum - the pipe showed up within a week. It took all summer, didn't get to install it until this year. I felt like they were trying to welch on the deal whereas they've since raised the price of the piece over $100.
I have a 3" 5 speed prochamber and a MAC 3" GT cat-back waiting. I ran a MAC shorty header/prochamber/MAC cat-back on my old '90 GT and really liked it. So much so that I was all in on using MAC this time. Not next time. MAC lost me as a customer....if they survive what ever is going on.
I have the same setup (Same Prochamber and Cat-back) so please let me know how it all works out. (How you did it also maybe pics and extra parts needed)
Depending on the HP #s on my new build I maybe doing the same.
I have always like MAC stuff and have had good luck with it. I love the way their mufflers sound. Their customer service has always been lacking and I think that it is because they are a low volume manufacturer and can only make things so fast.
Also, I have some 3" MAC GT tailpipes for sale, they are from their 3" cat back kit if anyone might be interested.
Last year I ordered the 3" Prochamber for shorty headers from American Muscle. It was backordered when I placed my order. The next day prices went up $100+. I thought I wasn't going to get it because I bought before the price increase. I forget exactly I how long I waited but I think it was 4-6 weeks. American Muscle sent me a few update emails. Purchase was good.
I ordered my headers on June 18th. I cancelled that order on September 15th. You can do the math if you want but that's way to f'n long. And they weren't returning calls or answering email requests for order updates.
4-6 weeks would have been ok. I was approaching 12-13 weeks and lost a whole summer. F them!
Pretty much what happened to me last year. I kept calling the vendor (American Muscle?) and MAC until they got tired of me and shipped the piece. Granted, I was busy and didn't pursue it but it easily took 3+ months.
Thats to bad, i used Mac for my full exhaust years back. Best sounding mufflers IMO. I dont know if any other company that offers full 3" exhaust for 351 swaps. Unless they changed there product i was told BBK's swap headers narrow to 2.5 at the collectors opening and Macs didnt?
When my order started going sideways I looked at BBK for my headers and they sell 1 3/4" primary 302 long tubes (great!) but they dump into 2 1/2" collectors (bahhhh!!). So I figured I'd wait it out. Then I got sick of waiting it out.
If the Doug's headers are made well, they are in the same ballpark as every other header cost wise. Which I know things (base materials) got more expensive recently, but WOW have prices really jumped the past couple years.
Collector is 3" like most (was just reading a thread about the BBK headers), it's just the ball-socket that connects to their mid-pipes that tapers to 2 1/2" so it can fit the 90% of applications that use 2.5" exhaust. As people are willing to do with the other brands (i.e. Doug's above), modification may be your only choice. Cut the ball-socket off and weld on the connector of your choice.
Well, that and they're the only company that makes 1 3/4" shorties for a 351W swap. And then due to my complaint added a 3" bolt pattern SOLID flange to accommodate installation on larger heads and eliminate the individual flange movement issues.
Lousy customer service - check
Only game in town - check
All that being said, I ended up with RCI mid-length headers. Although they are mated to a MAC 3" prochamber since, once again, they're the only game in town for a 3" shorty header style h/x pipe.
If one can wait a few months, is it worth buying MAC? They aren't stiffing people on orders, right? I have a pair of 20 year old MAC 1-5/8" LT's with 2.5" collector and want to move up to MAC 1-3/4" LT's (ceramic) with 2.5" collector, but don't need them until next spring.
You can roll the dice. I waited 3 months and said F it. I had as much information about the status of my order at the moment I ordered the headers right up until the moment I cancelled the order. There was NEVER one hint of an update and the vendor I bought from couldn't get MAC to answer the phone or return emails. So, I went a different direction. I'd look for a different manufacturer personally. Or at the very least someplace that had them in stock.
