5.0 rocker arm movement/noise

I heard loud knocking under driver side valve cover, I took it off and noticed one rocker has a lot of movement where the rest don’t.

Things I’ve checked:
-push rod is not bent (I.e. it rolls smooth across table)
-lifter (I was told the way to test a lifter is to see if it can be pushed in by hand- which it can’t
-valve isn’t stuck. I see movement when I let the engine run without valve cover.

Thanks in advance and happy Father’s Day to the mustang Dads!

Well if you mean by the silver indentation, maybe a little but not that bad. But I swapped the rocker with one that didnít move and then it still has movement.

'a little' ??

well, keep running it until it self clearances, the noise will eventually go away.

Can you explain what you mean by movement? Is the arm really easy to compress against the pushrod/lifter? If so, sounds like you have a bad lifter. You can try to take it apart and clean it or just replace it. Unless you have a sonic cleaner I would just replace it. If they are stock style lifters make sure the body of the new one matches the style you take out. There are 2 different body styles for OEM lifters

By movement, itís like there is space between the rocker and either the valve or pushrod and it allows movement in that direction as well as side to side.

Is this sarcasm or serious? Lol. The engine has been sitting for awhile, I thought about putting stop tick or transmission fluid in the oil and seeing if it clears up; but I hate to drive it like that. You know everything is looking at it thinking: "man what a piece of junk that old mustang is!" Plus thereís concern for dropping a valve and ruining the engine

Since you had the valve cover off, with the rocker in the 'up' position see if there is up/down play in the push rod.

Telling us the motor has sat for a long while makes me wonder if a lifter isn't pumping up now.
I'm guessing that this issue did not exist when the vehicle/motor was set aside. Is this a bad assumption?

if the pushrod is hitting the rocker, there is something wrong, ie wrong rocker, poor quality?

Itís not hitting the rocker no. The loose rocker rests on the pushrod and moves when itís supposed to.
