383w 10.3 to 1 comp. Duane Busch heads. 227 TFS high ports. Hyd roller cam low .6XX. TFS box R intake with a 90mm accufab T.B. Accufab 1 7/8'' 3 1/2'' headers. Holley Hp and a F1a procharger. Just got her fired up so time will tell how I like it. It's in a 91 GT with 3.73 and n aod.

Sounds like it should be a great power producer

My build, of course. :lol: I do question the street-ability due to the cam, but I drive it on the street nonetheless.

427.6W (some call this a 427W, I think it's a 428W.)
  • Dart block 4.125 bore x 4 stroke
  • Mahle flat tops
  • AFR220 heads, 72cc chambers, 10.7:1
  • Custom HR cam
  • Edelbrock Supervic & 3848 elbow, Accufab 85mm TB & custom 100mm MAF (soon to be disappeared for Holley HP)
  • It's basically this engine, except I built it via short-block
  • RCI mid-length headers
  • MAC 3" prochamber mid-pipe

Quick and easy:

Stock 351W roller block
AFR 185 or 205 heads
Comp Cam XE 282
RPM air gap.
Holley 750 DP

Should make 450 ish, There are many ways to skin the cat. This is just one of many and easy (easier) on the wallet.

Yes, TG. Timing is still conservative as I iron the tune out, but ping hasn't occurred yet. It has a certain violence that erupts when I downshift and let the zero-balanced "big" small block get onto the cam - I'm not used to it yet. 7.9 MPG when I baby it kind of violence :lol:

You're lucky. We can't run anything over 10:1 here due to the crappy 91 octane. When I visit upstate NY; they have non ethanol fuel at various stations.

My 408W is 10.7:1 and I run 91. Total timing is 30 and it makes the best power there. It does not detonate at 32 total.

That's awesome! Would you mind divulging your build? I'm curious if the cam is bleeding off enough pressure to alleviate detonation?

That's perfect power for my needs. I've been wanting to do a carb build. How are the street manners? 5 speed? Gears? Thanks for sharing.

6 speed T56. 3:27 gears now so I can hit 75 mph in second gear for autocross Was 3.55. Itís great on the street. I can lug it down to 1,800 rpm if need be. Cruises at 2200 like a champ.

How does the car like the extra weight on the front end for autocross. That might be just the direction I take.

Its an aluminum block and I have a fiberglass hood but still retain the AC. 54% of the weight is on the front end. I am really just learning to autocross and have been spending time dialing out some of the tight understeer with springs and sway bars. Its getting there but I am not the best person to opine on the weight distribution. The car has a full Griggs GR40 suspension and was built for road course duties. On the road course I set it neutral to mild understeer and like it. I have been learning for over 20 years and the car is still much faster than I am. :surprise:

Ive seen several 351w SBE supercharged combos, and I gotta say that's my favorite. You can run a mild cam and still make all the power that chassis can handle on the street. And they still keep that classic sbf sound.

I feel like once you go with a stroker, cam requirements make you lose that classic sbf sound. If im wrong, and someone has an example of a large stoker that idles smoothly at a low rpm and doesn't have that raspy race car sound, please share.

I'm just not a fan of street motors where you have a 427 idling at 1100 rpm... not my thing.

My custom cammed 302 idles great at 800rpm, drives almost like a stock car and sounds mean and awesome with longtubes and a pro chamber. I'll probably supercharge it and be done with it. Mine really is a pure street car for fun.

What does it idle at comfortably? Got a video of what it sounds like?

Stock block 358, TFS Renegade 220, Box R, ProCharger F1C, a/a cooler, water-meth, AFM B-451 cam, Holley HP EFI, Mighty Might c4, spool, manual brakes, manual steering....street driven.

I love how my 347 sounds. Idles about 900 RPM perfectly.

Big cam and 11.3:1

It’s not a daily the only negative is not great in stop and go traffic etc. But I didn’t build it for driveability.

I’m accumulating parts for a 351 and with a SC. That’s probably 5 more more years down the road.

It’s currently a basement build.

Want to apologize, I did an average of that datalog and idle was 895.04 in that video.

I forgot that I had lowered the idle to 896 RPM after initially setting it at 950 RPM.

That does sound pretty darn good. A good bit more rowdy than my 302, but not too obnoxious. The point of my post is that there's a fine line between what sounds great for 5 minutes and what you can tolerate driving for hours. We are talking street cars here, and to me it has to be mellow enough to be enjoyable for lots of driving day in and day out, and those rowdy cams get old quick.

:surprise: OMG! You have one of those?! I've ALWAYS wondered how that would work, never talked to or seen anyone with that stoker. How do you like it?! Does it shake/vibrate a lot (something I heard stokers that size might do). Easy to drive on the street?

Most importantly... got a video you can share?! :smile2:
