Ford Racing "shorty" headers on 4.6DOHC Cobra

Good evening.

I'm starting to look into adding some mods to my stock 96
Cobra . One of the items would be exhaust of course. I
have SVO side exhaust and would prefer to keep them.
Is there any advantage to my adding Ford racing shorty
headers to my setup? I will be adding a performance chip,
K & N air intake setup, 4.10 gears...... However, the engine
will most likely stay NA.

So, are the shorty headers worth the effort to install them?

I would welcome any and all input.

Thanks,
Steve

With regards to the shorty headers on your combo...it really depends on a few things.

1.) Do you need to be smog legal
2.) Is the car a pure street 50/50 or pure track
3.) Do you mind removing going through the hassle removing/installing headers for tranny work

Answer these three questions...then we'll talk.

I'll answer 2 of them for him:
(1) FRPP "shorty" headers technically are not emissions legal but since you can't see them you'll never know they were there

(3) shorties do not hinder the removal of the transmission. Some long tube headers do.

There are many people here that will agree that the gains from installing shorty headers on a NA Cobra will hardly be worth the work and money. Another reason you'll probably won't notice them. I would let someone here that has dyno proof on the same day whether shorty-headers are worth it on a NA 32V-Cobra.

My Bad, the questions were semi-rhetorical...I was preparing him for the "Shorties might not be worth it." And going to see if he wanted to take the plunge for long tubes. To really see some Real world gains (except in rare cases like Bob Cosby's car or something) you can't be the Longtube headers (Anything but MAC) Hooker, BBK, Kooks all make great headers for our cars. If i was going to put any other header on the car, i would only consider JBA shorties...But at nearly $650 a peice.....Just get the long tubes or nothing. Happy trails...

shorties are worthless, and you lose power with the SVO side pipes

If you're going shorts, do the JBA 1 5/8". 301 to 318 hp, 299 to 317 tq.

Cobra shorty headers

Wow,

Approx. 17 hp with the headers! So I
guess the really big question is: Is it
worth the investment? I would be very
interested in hearing your candid
thoughts on this.

BTW, what did these particular headers
cost for the set? Were they a direct bolt
on, or were modifications required?

Lastly, thanks for the input. I was hoping a member would give me a ray of hope .

One more question for you. Is your Cobra NA or what? What other mods have you done?

Basically, I want another 60-90 hp without going to serious modifications. Can I do that in your opinion?

Thanks again,
Steve

According to my dyno run I gained 6hp and 7lbs-ft of torque by doing nothing! I would have to see multiple runs for each case on the same day to warrant $650 shorty headers.

His a/f on that chart isnt consistent either alot could have come from that. I have heard bad things about jbas as far as crappy welds on the tubes to the flange. I bought some brand new ones for 200 bux and when I saw the welds I sold them for 300 on ebay. Not worth it to me to have the welds break and you have to take them down again for the minamal gains you will see.

If you do decide to go with JBA shorties, rpmoutlet.com has them for $525 (1-5/8", coated).

They are the 1 5/8" JBA Shorts, yes shorts, direct bolt ups. Don't bother with frpp or the 1 1/2' JBAs. The 1 5/8' JBAs are going to cost a pretty penny to buy and the install isn't cheap either. Get a dyno tune and aftermarket chip when you are with your mods. A reputable tuner, of course.
Worth it? $450 or so (I forget, it was a while ago) for the headers and $350 for the install. All for 17ish hp. I think so, someone else's math may differ. If you notice, contrary to popular belief, I picked up hp all through the rpm range, not just peak. Another tip - all the mods work together. Look at the total package. Don't just expect 17 across the board without other mods, such as Steeda pullies and a k&n filter with cai. All of my mods are in the sig. Do yourself a favor and get the gears first. 4.10's a good street choice. Get 4.30s if you are going to the track. You will max out at about 330rwhp with all bolt ons. See LINKY.
Back in the old days, we didn't have that for research and had to fish on our own! Good Luck!
